Blu-ray Capsule Review: Extract
Just doesn't deliver the way you'd expect it to
QUICK THOUGHTS: I don't mind this film, but I'm not overjoyed watching it. It sort of plays like a sitcom with your favorite stars, but it's not one of the "good" episodes, instead it's just the guys doing their thing and as a result you watch it instead of watching something else. Best put, this is a movie you catch on HBO or Showtime when nothing else is on after having rented it from Netflix.
Oh, as for a quick synopsis, Jason Bateman owns an extract plant and is planning on selling it off and retiring when one of his employees is injured and threatens to sue the plant putting the sale in limbo, all while Mila Kunis plays a con artist whom Bateman is considering cheating on his wife (Kristen Wiig) with. The potential is there, but the delivery is empty.
SUPPLEMENTS: We're talking pretty much bare bones here. There are 4 minutes and 30 seconds worth of extended scenes, which means you really only get about 45 seconds of new stuff as an extra joke is tacked onto the end of a handful of scenes. This is followed up by a 30 second deleted scene, which is equally unimpressive. Finally, there's a 10 minute featurette that reveals the big fact that the film was shot in an actual factory! What? That's crazy. No, seriously, all of these features are a waste.
FINAL THOUGHTS: If it wasn't obvious, this isn't a title I'd recommend you shell out money for. Just give it a Netflix rental, smile a couple of times and be done with it.

Yo,
Brad (the reviewer here) is the kinda guy who would not get office space/king of the hill cept after the fact–when it becomes a cult hit. Although he'd never admit that. Extract is smart comedy–groundbreaking and counter culture like all the mike judge stuff. It is not THE HANGOVER–rapid jokes/sight gags etc. I cut Brad slack-cuz that judge type humor is probably uncomfortable and unfamiliar to him. My take, if u liked office space –you'll really like Extract. The film was very similar to my mid life crisis!
Anyone who paid attention watching The Hangover knows that it had something else other than sight gags- an interesting plot and good acting. (And he didn't like The Hangover all that much, btw, you could look)
@murdock: I liked The Hangover, just not as much the second time. In fact if you read my review where the last sentence reads, "It's still funny after a second viewing, just not as funny," you would know that. I gave the first viewing an A-. What more do you need? Also, for the most part, it's all sight gags, whatever is left over is the little bit that helped it remain slightly funny.
u missed my point. Extract is a cult film like office space. A movie like hangover had a budget five times that of extract.–according to BO mojo. That is a studio movie–not a cult movie. Mike judge, who colors outside of the traditional formulaic lines (outside of the credit tag and zacks performance-ya cant tell me hangover was anything more than a standard rated r studio comedy) never gets respect until the masses pick up on it. Then everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Like Brevert will. Late
