Blu-Ray Capsule Review: 'Earth'
An excellent commercial for 'Planet Earth'
QUICK THOUGHTS: I didn't see this one in theaters, but that was primarily due to the reason that all they really did with this was take BBC's excellent "Planet Earth" series, chop it down from nearly nine hours of footage to 90 minutes and replace David Attenborough's narration with James Earl Jones. Now don't get me wrong, this is excellent stuff, but since I had already seen it in the epic scale of the "Planet Earth" series I wasn't entirely moved to see it in theaters. Had it been filmed in IMAX I probably would have made an exception.
As for this Blu-ray release, it still doesn't make me wish I saw it in theaters, but it does have me itching to buy "Planet Earth" on Blu-ray as opposed to the mere DVD set I currently own (and reviewed right here). This is just immaculate footage and this 90-minute feature serves as a fantastic feature length commercial for the full-on BBC series and is something many of you may want to own on top of "Planet Earth" as it is simply a drastically abbreviated version. I have been told there is some new footage inside of it, but I can't tell you what that is specifically, but I can say the narrative presented wasn't new.
SUPPLEMENTS: The supplements aren't half bad, but still don't feel all that new to people that have already seen "Planet Earth" and the supplements that came with that series. There is a picture-in-picture feature that also offers up occasional trivia information based on what you are watching that is pretty cool and the making-of doc is interesting. I will say one thing that looked intriguing was the trailer for Oceans, which hits theaters next April and showed a bunch of footage that actually looked new and quite impressive. Now that one I may need to make my way to the theater for.

I saw this in theaters and I was completely mesmerized. I haven't seen the BBC series (yet).
Just let me tell you, and i believe this is an objective opinion… Earth as 90m doc is NOTHING comparing to full series.
