The story has gotten a major makeover

I like Sienna Miller, but it's hard to say Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (once referred to as Nottingham) isn't packing a little more star power and acting cred now that Cate Blanchett has officially signed on to replace Miller in the vacated role of Maid Marian opposite Russell Crowe.

The news comes from Variety who says the story of the man that robbed from the rich and gave to the poor has "evolved into a Gladiator version of the Robin Hood legend" with the following story description:

Crowe plays Robin of Loxley in an origin story of Robin Hood that hews close to historical facts of the period. Abandoned as a child, he finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin's abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian, a strong, independent woman.

The report also goes on to say the film will be shot at a $130 million budget, it will be shot in the U.K. and Scott will be aiming for a PG-13 rating.

Universal Pictures is releasing the film with an expected 2010 release date.

    I sure as hell am glad Cate Blanchett is taking the role, Miller as Maid Marion was laughable at best, Virginal Maid, definately not Miller

    Yes this definitely improves the movie's outlook.

    Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe & Cate Blanchett – I don't care if the movie were an update of the Robin Hood story set in the year 3010 on the planet of Suckage, I would still be excited!

    I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone see this film contending for any Academy Awards (at least for Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup)?

    @Quake82:
    Calm down. I agree this has tremendous possibilities to be a great film…equally possible is the potential for a disaster. Wasn't Crowe's and Scott's last film "A Good Year?" That was a indeed a bad year, I say, despite my enjoyment of Abbie Cornish's and Tom Hollander's performances. Don't go nominating this one for Oscars before it is even made.

    @Patricia: Yes, A Good Year was quite the disappointment; however, I believe its because Sir Ridley abandoned what he does best: The Epic. Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven – these were finely crafted, epic, Oscar-worthy (yes, even Kingdom of Heaven was a fascinated feast for the eyes) films. I'm just saying, when Scott sticks to his guns, look out.

    I don't care if the film wins any awards or not, I just hope its great.

    P.S. Oh, and let us not forget Black Hawk Down – I will never understand how it got left out of the race for Best Picture and then the winner was the over-hyped, "decent" film that was A Beautiful Mind. Whereas BHD was possibly the best film ever made regarding "modern" warfare.

    $130 million?? Cue skepticism right here. It's going to have a challenge recouping that budget. Sure, the pedigree looks good, but "Body of Lies" had a good pedigree and it didn't help at the box office. I'd feel a lot more secure if the budget was something like $60-70 million instead.

    Did anyone actually like A Good Year…YES…ME!
