I have published 72 new reviews so far in the last six months, plus capsule reviews for three films I saw at the Seattle Film Festival prior to leaving for Cannes. From that bunch, nine stand out as potential end of the year top ten films for me, in fact, looking at the list I am quite happy seeing all nine there as I think they serve as a good representation of the best 2012 has had to offer on the festival circuit, indie circuit and even a blockbuster slides on in there.
Choosing a "best of the best" among the nine below is not easy as I'll probably do what I do every year before making my final top ten and watch each of them again. Moonrise Kingdom, Laurence Anyways and Killing them Softly certainly stand out however. Rust and Bone can likely only get better with time, I am excited to watch Bullhead again and I am still happy with how unexpectedly enjoyable Magic Mike was.
What I'm most interested in is finding out what films will actually be better than the nine I have listed below that are yet to come. But we'll explore those possibilities soon enough. For now, let's begin our look back...

I wanted to do a list of ten but I didn't feel like Brave or The Five-Year Engagement really belonged on a list declaring films the "worst" of the year. I'm quite certain neither of those films will be among those I consider at the end of the year so there is no sense including them now. I almost removed The Raven was well since that wasn't necessarily a movie I hated as much as it just wasn't any good.
My girlfriend also just watched the Blu-ray for American Reunion reminding me how bad that one was, I didn't like Ted but would give it a second chance before any of the films below and when it comes down to it, I'd probably watch The Lucky One one more time before popping the worst of these films in the Blu-ray player.
While I do list these in alphabetical order, easily the worst of the bunch is Wrath of the Titans, which is really saying something considering how downright awful Piranha 3DD was. However, had the makers of Piranha 3DD been given a budget of $150 million I'm pretty sure they would have made a movie with maybe two good lines as opposed to just one. Sometimes these decisions come down to the tiniest of details.

First a caveat, I normally only drag myself to the theater for big budget flicks. For small budget or indie flicks I usually wait until they're on Netflix and rent them or if they're on sale buy them. So:

Lockout, One for the Money and Wrath of the Titans are the worst of this year. Downright bad movies.
The Grey was surprisingly good .. a movie that isn't in your list.
A little like one or two others this is only what I have seen of 2012 theatrical releases so far this year, often the littler ones and the indie circuit have to wait for rental because they don't play near me or for long enough to get to them.

It may even give Battleship a run for it's money as worst of the year.
I've seen less than I would have liked to but that's what you get living abroad...
Best:
Bullhead-unexpectedly great, strong visuals, haunting thematically and wildly original, this has kept me thinking more than any movie of the year so far.
Prometheus-stunning, sprawling and thoughtful
Cabin in the Woods- off the walls entertaining meta-horror The Avengers- perfectly executed geekgasm that is a strong contender for best superhero movie in my book
Worst:
Snow White and the Huntsman- honestly the trailer duped me into thinking this trash would be worth while, twas not.
The Dictator- more of just a huge disappoint as I'm a big fan of Cohen and this is his worst by a long shot. Shouldn't of dropped the hidden camera 'gotcha' gag.
Still waiting on Moonrise as Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors.

Love these articles - of your top 9 i've only see Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Avengers and Bullhead. I'm pretty sure that Jeff will be in my top 10 at the end of the year.
I'm also slightly surprised that you didn't mention Lawless anywhere considering your solid review.
Yeah, Lawless was on the cusp. Didn't want to put it in the "Junk Food" section even though I now sort of feel that's the best place for it... high junk food, but still...
You could make another category or put it in "MIDWAY POINT HONORABLE MENTIONS" especially based on your review.
The forgiveness of Blood and Declaration of War
BULLHEAD should probably fall under the "feels more like a 2011 film" heading, since that's when it qualified for an Oscar nomination.

My only real two favourites so far are Marley and Moonrise Kingdom. In addition I really liked The Grey, 21 Jump Street and The Avengers, but wouldn't call them potential "best of the year" material.
I just didn't watch any of the bad movies this year. However, I have started my best of list. Avengers is first, Magic Mike barely second, 21 Jump Street third, and that is it thus far

I haven't seen nearly as many films I'd like, but with that being said Moonrise Kingdom is easily my favorite film of the year, the only one I've seen that will be one my top 10, with no others having a shot. Other than that I really had a lot of fun with 21 Jump Street, Avengers. The only two that I could say weren't good would be Cosmopolis (there's a lot there, but it didn't come together into a remotely compelling film for me), Project X.
Best
1: The Hunger Games- A smart, excelent adaptation of an equally excelent book. Jennifer Lawrence's performance is increadible, and Woody Harelson, Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci give Some of the best supporting performances. But this mocie acomplishes something rare: it creates a movie that can STAND ALONE, and not be JUST an adaptation.
2: The Avengers- Hunger Games only beats this out by a TINY BIT, but I still feel this movie is INCREADIBLE, and maybe the closest thing to a 'perfect' movie we'll ever get.
3: Prometheus- I just loved this movie in general.
4: Jeff Who lives At Home
They will probably all find spots on my top 10 list at the end of the year

I honestly don't see how you can even mention Seeking a friend in any kind of top 10 list -- that was such a boring mess
I haven't seen any of the festival films or any of the films playing in limited release. The two of limited release films that I most want to see right now are To Rome With Love and Beasts of the Southern Wild.
That being said, I would say my only top ten contenders so far are Moonrise Kingdom (easily the best of the year so far) and Prometheus, which I need to see again. I might throw honerable mentions at John Carter, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, and maybe The Five-Year Engagement.

So far, I haven't seen anything spectacular, but I'd have to go with Cabin in the Woods as my favorite. There's something fantastic about the way it simultaneously celebrates and tears apart the horror genre in a matter of 90 minutes. It's just a fun ride from start to finish, and one I'll be visiting again very soon.
Other great movies I've seen: Sound of My Voice, 21 Jump Street, and, of course, The Avengers (it would have placed higher, but I don't feel like it really picks up until the forest battle).
I'm trying to avoid bad movies this year, so I haven't seen many. That being said, the worst I've seen is Project X (unfunny, unoriginal, etc.) and the year's biggest disappointment so far is Wanderlust (I'm still shocked that the people behind Role Models could turn in a movie this bad).

Brave: Didn't seem like a Pixar movie at all. Not as bad as Cars 2, but 2nd worst Pixar movie ever.
And, the WORST movies of the year:
Battleship: The script and acting was awful. Rihanna and the movie both deserve a Razzie. I like Skarsgard as Eric Northman on True Blood, but he is terrible in this. Worst movie ever behind Green Lantern.
The Cabin in the Woods: The ending made it suck.

Not many people are willing to pay to see movies anymore..that's a bit sad, but it happens a lot in our generation..so don't feel bad about that ;)
I can't wait to see Killing Them Softly, but I have a question for Brad (or anyone whose seen it): how does it compare to The Assassination of Jesse James in terms of tone? Also, is the score particularly memorable? Because Jesse James had a great one.
I haven't seen any great movies so far this year (here's hoping Savages gets my first 4/5 star rating)but The Deep Blue Sea and Magic Mike were the best of the lot.
The worst film so far (and I don't intentionally watch bad movies, so I'm sure there are movies that are far worse) would have to be Hick.

I forgot to point out some things:
Brave and Men in Black 3 are among my favorite movies list for this year so far. I didn't like Brave the first time, but then I saw it again over the weekend and I loved it. It was much more better than Cars 2 and even better than Cars 1, and while it's not as magnificent as the Toy Story movies and WALL-E, it has the genuine warmth and heart that defines the best Disney and Pixar animated features. The plot wasn't THAT simple as what most critics point, nor was it very complex. Anyway I now love everything about the movie and gave it a B+.
Dr. Suess' The Lorax wasn't particularly good as I hoped it would be, but I love the songs from the movie. I liked The Three Stooges but I was hoping it would be as good as the Farrelly brothers' There's Something About Mary. Act of Valor is not all what I thought it would be.

1. The Avengers (Best Superhero movie I've ever seen! Seen it in IMAX 3D and 3D and it was epic in every way I saw it! Everyone involved was amazing, the jokes were spot on, action was present and the visual effects were terrific! New York! Kudos to Joss Whedon btw)
2. Project X (I know everybody hated this movie but for me it was just my cup of tea! Ofcourse it was standard predictable and not original but the soundtrack , the camera shots, THE PARTY, and the many jokes and ofcourse some eye-candy of Alexis Knapp and Kirby Bliss Blanton! It was silly fun at the movies!)
3. Young Adult (I really have no words for this movie! I loved it! Charlize Theron pulls off one of her best performances in her whole carreer! She was snubbed big time during the Oscars! It was hilarious and sometimes dramatic! Works for me!)
4. Martha Marcy May Marlene (It was haunting, captivating and kept me on the edge of my seat! Elizabeth Olsen definitely has welcomed herself in Hollywood in a big way! Too bad she was snubbed at the Oscars! John Hawkes did a great job portraying a creepy character)
5. The Hunger Games (Never read the books or anything but the trailers looked so epic, saw it multiple times and I was amazed! It was a fantastic movie to see and Jennifer Lawrence was just perfect in her role! The whole cast was terrific as were the thrills and visual effects!)
6. We Bought a Zoo (Family friendly and beautifully filmed, Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning were all great in it, the landscape was picture perfect and some drama scenes almost made me drop a tear, a real winner!)
7. Chronicle (Finally a movie that proved that a found footage movie could be original yet fresh to the mind! The visuals were awesome and the story and acting was powerful! Very thrilling!)
8. Hugo (Beautiful movie, I saw it twice in theatres and still love it so much, the visuals were fantastic as was the 3D and Chloe Grace Moretz was once again in a brillant movie! Martin Scorcese did a great job!)
9. The Muppets (It was fantastic, the songs were enjoyable as was the cast and cameos, I had a very fun time at the movie theatre while watching this movie!)
10. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (It was full of action, thrills and great drama scenes! Rooney Mara definitely deserved the Oscar nomination and Daniel Craig and Stellan Skarsgard were terrific too)

1. The Devil Inside (I literally wanted to demand my time back, thank god I don't pay to see a movie cause I have a card where I can see unlimited movies whenever (no matter in 3D or IMAX(3D)! I want and pay $26 per month! Nothing will for sure top this!)
2. Wrath of the Titans (HORRIBLE MOVIE! Only Sam Worthington and Rosamund Pike were good but the story is not there and it's predictable!)
3. Ghost Rider 2 (Have not seen the original movie so I went in with low expectations and still ended up disappointed, what a horrible time at the movies! Nicolas Cage has to take more serious roles or no-one will see his movies ever again!)
4. Piranha 3DD (A trainwreck from start to finish, there are some awesome scenes but overall it's a huge step down from Piranha 3D! Awesome performances by Katrina Bowden and Danielle Panabaker but they couldn't save the movie at all)
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Seriously I couldn't enjoy this movie or understand like one minute, it was boring, still filled with great performances but 2 hours and more was just too long for me... Maybe because I'm 17 and not the audience?)
6. Trespass (Godawful movie, don't ask why!)
7. Jack & Jill (It had some amusing jokes but overall it was too horrible to watch and I regret that I even took the time to see this thing!)
8. Seeking Justice (Again Nicolas Cage, 3 movies of you on my worst movies top 10 in 1 year! I think some improvement is likely! I did love January Jones and Guy Pearce in this movie)
9. Chernobyl Diaries (Everything you saw in the trailer is the only thing you get in the movie, seriously a radioactive bear in an empty apartment? Time for some new ideas Oren Peli)
10. Safe (Not Jason Statham at his best, he's letdown by a horrible and predictable story with less action and more blood, not a good combination!)
I'm only 2 years older than you and I thought Tinker Tailor was terrific.
Yeah, I think it was just not a movie for me and I was better off skipping it, it got great critical praise but nearly everybody in the movie theatre fell asleep... Too bad, I really wanted to understand the movie.
Absolutely loved Jeff Who Lives at Home. I'm starting really look forward to Duplass projects.

The Intouchables (Just plain fun with a couple of irresistible actors)
Biggest disappointment
From Paris with Love (I thought this movie was idiotic and a real letdown after "Midnight in Paris")
I think it was called To Rome with Love, From Paris with Love was an action thriller starring John Travolta from 2010 lol!
The Grey belongs on your best of list. There is still a lot I need to see but that film was one of the most powerful in recent memory.
Gotta disagree about Snow White and the Huntsman. Had some strong visual work, but overall was far too middling to be on a worst of list. Its not bad enough for that kind of impression.

Going back in history, there was a 1955 Alec Guinness movie called "To Paris with Love." Maybe one day they'll make a film called "From Paris to Rome with Love."
I agree with several other comments about The Grey. I would definitely include that on a Best Of list if I were to make one right now. I thought it was a pretty powerful film and definitely left me thinking for a long time after.
I had it in the article for a bit, but I came away more impressed by the filmmaking than the film overall. Still good, but didn't make my list.
I still have to check out "Goon", "Magic Mike", "Moonrise Kingdom", "Prometheus" and "The Grey." That being said:
My favorites of the year so far were "The Cabin in the Woods" and "The Avengers", both of which I think could end up on my Top 10 List at the end of the year. I also really liked "The Hunger Games" and "21 Jump Street", though I highly doubt they'd be on my Top 10 list.
As for my least favorites this year, I'd say that "The Lorax" was, by far, the worst movie I've seen so far this year.
I'm shocked that the Grey is on so many people's list -- that was so dull, I had so much trouble just getting through it.
Brad... your article says TOP TEN OF THE YEAR but only has 9 movies. Is there a reason for it, did you accidentally miss a film or did you think 10 just sounds more attractive than 9?
Here's the deal. I was going to list my top 10 movies of the year and then I noticed I have only WATCHED 10 movies that were released this year. I spent most of my movie-time this year catching up with films and TV series from the least few years. Nothing this year really called onto me. I want to see some of your top 10 (9), but I'm not as lucky enough to be invited to Cannes. :(

Not that great a selection, but there really wasn't a great selection in theaters the past 6 months. Hopefully, the second half of the year is much better. I want all these movies off my "top 10" ASAP.

Just curious, did you not see Cosmopolis at Cannes this year? I can't find a review for it on the site, and I didn't think that would be a movie that you would miss. Thanks.
Are Connor and I the only people who saw, Ted? It's deserving of some top status. At least Junk Food level. Ted and 21 Jump Street have been the best comedies of the year. The Dictator, unfortunately, didn't even come close to Bruno, which didn't even come close to Borat.

Best for me is easy, worst is tougher because I choose to avoid bad movies or ones I know I won't like. Even though I'd give [I]Ted[/I] a "C", it's still my worst of the year just based on what I've seen.

I really think that Act Of Valor should be in the MIDWAY POINT HONORABLE MENTIONS list, it honors the fighting soldiers of the US. The movie Brave is definitely be in the WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR list along with The Lorax, they suck like hell.
