Battered and bloodied

The day I left the Cannes Film Festival, that night Wild Bunch held an event screening five minutes from Kar Wai Wong's much-anticipated and much-delayed The Grandmasters and three minutes from the re-teaming of Drive star and director duo, Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives.

Many press had already left the festival by the time this surprise footage screened and unfortunately Google Translate butchers what my friends at Cinema Teaser wrote, though by reading the English translation you get the sense what was shown was quite bloody. That, in fact, is no further surprise once you check out these new behind-the-scenes photos from the shooting of Only God Forgives.

The film centers on a former kickboxer and gangster (Gosling), Julian, living in Bangkok who ten years ago killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. When is brother is killed, his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives to collect his body and sends Julian to find his killers and 'raise hell'. A more thorough synopsis can be found here.

As of now it is unclear just when Only God Forgives will hit theaters, my hope is for a Toronto premiere followed by a late 2012 release, which is why I included it on my most anticipated list for the year. For now, enjoy these behind the scenes shots from the film courtesy of Kinopoisk.

Is the whole movie in black and white?

I assume none of it will be.

I guess Gosling was too pretty in Drive...had to beat him up a little bit for this one.

If it's half as good as Drive I'm excited. Hope it gets released late 2012.

Gosling & Refn can do no wrong. I predict this will easily make its way into my top 5 of the year. I also predict a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Kristin Scott Thomas (a la Albert Brooks, even though he didn't end up getting nominated).

I guess the film is in color, but it would be very interesting if it were black and white. These pictures look amazing.

I've always wondered why Nic Refn always wears an apron when he's directing. I first noticed it in the special features for Drive and now he's wearing it again in the third picture here.

Aside from that, this looks pretty cool.

He's talked about it before in interviews. To him, it's kinda like a security blanket. He only feels comfortable directing when he has it on. From what I understand, Von Trier does a similar thing, only with a Swastika, lol, those Danes...
