'Battleship,' 'Think Like a Man,' 'Five-Year Engagement' and 'Boardwalk Empire' This Week On DVD and Blu-ray

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: August 27, 2012

I have no idea how studios choose their release dates, but this week is packed. It's not necessarily a week loaded with quality films, but considering the lackluster weeks recently I have no idea why they wouldn't have waited to unload some of these a couple weeks ago when they could have dominated a weaker marketplace.

Some of the more intriguing titles are catalog selections in my "Even More" selection including individual releases of the Extended Editions of Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray and 100th Anniversary Blu-ray releases of Universal's Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Airport and Harvey not to mention season releases of "The Walking Dead", "Homeland" and "Once Upon a Time".

That said, there are a few solid titles among this week's releases and be sure and check out the new release dates as I now have confirmed dates for the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man and Brave.

Boardwalk Empire - The Complete Second Season
Boardwalk Empire - The Complete Second Season
I have found no time to watch this, but I really want to. I wasn't a huge fan of the first season, but I'm intrigued enough to continue. I just need to find the time to fit this in. Luckily these seasons aren't extraordinarily long so it won't take forever to watch and at $34.99 for the Blu-ray and $29.99 for the DVD, is it just me or is the price down a little bit compared to what these HBO series are normally priced at?

The Pirates! Band of Misfits
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Never did end up seeing this one, but if it looks like it will be one of the year's animated contenders I'll likely give it a watch later this year. One of the reasons I didn't rush to see it was because every time I would go to a Regal theater for about two months straight before this film's release the theater would play the same commercial for it every single time. I got so tired of this movie before it ever even screened. It always ended with that "Make Yourself a Pirate" app. Ugh, makes me mad just thinking about it.

Think Like a Man
Think Like a Man
What we have here is the best romantic comedy of the year so far and a film you'll likely enjoy even more in the comfort of your own home, without any distractions or people stepping on you. You can read my theatrical review right here.

The Lucky One
The Lucky One
Make no mistake, this is not a good movie, but if you know what you're in for and like the kind of movie this type of film delivers then you should be okay. But ladies, if you want your man to watch a romance of any kind, go with Think Like a Man instead. You can read my theatrical review of this one right here.

Darling Companion
Darling Companion
Just the synopsis for this one made me not want to see it. It goes like this:

Darling Companion is the story of a woman who loves her dog more than her husband. And then her husband loses the dog.

That is a synopsis packed with built-in emotion. Dogs are cute. Why doesn't she love her husband as much as the dog? He's just not tending to her needs. Did the husband lose the dog on purpose? Where is the dog? Now she hates him? He still loves her. Friends help look for the dog. They find the dog. It brings them all closer together. The end.

The Five-Year Engagement
The Five-Year Engagement
There are a lot of movies coming out today, but I can't say many of them are all that good as The Five-Year Engagement is another bad one. This just wasn't a funny, but I'm not entirely sure that was the goal as it did a terrible job mixing drama and comedy to the point drama was sacrificed for laughs and the whole thing fell apart. You can read my theatrical review here.

I'll be writing more on this one soon enough, but it came out while I was at the Cannes Film Festival so I didn't get to see it until it arrived on Blu-ray and it was almost immediately evident it was just as bad as people had said. There were points I couldn't actually believe some of the things that were going on, but more on that shortly. If you must see this film, rent it, you won't be likely to return to it a second time unless you and your friends plan on sitting around making fun of it.

You couldn't get me into the theater to watch this and I'm certainly not going to watch it at home.

The Moth Diaries
The Moth Diaries
Directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho), I'm curious about The Moth Diaries, which I was unable to catch at the Toronto Film Festival last year, but the reviews haven't exactly inspired me to rush out and see it.

Boardwalk Empire is really good but I wouldn't but it. I would say the second season was definitely better than the first so I'm hoping the 3rd gets even better.

"The Moth Diaries" does look kind of interesting, and it's on Netflix Streaming now. Might give it a watch later this week.

I enjoyed "Pirates!", probably is the best animated film Ive seen this year, but that isnt much considering the rest were pretty bad (I liked "Madagascar 3" though, that was surprise)
Only listed here is "Headhunters", which is great, it isnt anything new but its a smart and interesting well made thriller that everyone should give at least a chance.
Oh, I almost forgot, "Battleship" is a piece of garbage.

In the last sentence on the "Pirates!" blurb you should have said "Argh!!" instead of "ugh!" haha.

I don't watch much TV, but "Homeland" was very good. At $24.99 on both Amazon and Best Buy this one is a good deal - bet it helped drive down the price of "Boardwalk Empire", as well.

I also couldn't love Boardwalk Empire on season 1 but I would rent (not buy) seasons of it.

I was interested in The Moth Diaries but who knows when I'll catch it.

I'm rewatching Battleship this week - just to see if it makes me howl in laughter like it did first time round. I'm very optimistic it will.

But I already have Prometheus on preorder.

It's shaping up to be a nice Christmas on the Blu-ray front:

    Boardwalk Empire: Season 2
The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions (15 discs)

I really liked Boardwalk Empire and recommend it highly. My coworkers at Dish and I went to see The Five Year Engagement when it was in theaters earlier this year. It was funny, but a little immature for my taste. It sounds corny but I’m actually looking forward to Battleship. I just added it to my Blockbuster @Home queue. With Blockbuster @Home the movie is delivered to my door, and there are no late fees. When I’m done, I can drop it off in the mail or take it to my local store and swap it out for another movie. I think after I am done watching Battleship, I really would like to see Boardwalk Empire again.
