'Basterds' and Bullock Lead 2010 Screen Actors Guild Award Winners
It's getting easier and easier to predict the Oscar race
Tonight the Screen Actors Guild awarded the acting world for their 2009 contributions with the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards and Inglourious Basterds was the big winner of the night taking home the prized Best Ensemble as well as chalked up another win for Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor. The biggest surprise and only category that was really up in the air, however, was Best Actress. The question was whether the award would land in the arms of Meryl Streep or Sandra Bullock and to my personal surprise Bullock went home the recipient which means her chances of winning the Oscar have now sky rocketed.
There were no other surprises as Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for Crazy Heart and Mo'Nique won Best Supporting Actress for Precious. Bridges, Mo'Nique and Waltz have pretty much already assured themselves of an Oscar win, but that Best Actress category still remains something of a mystery.
For much of the year Carey Mulligan (An Education) was the perceived winner while the end of the year critics kudos lauded Streep while Bullock quietly inched forward in line. Now Bullock has taken home the Golden Globe and edged out Streep at the SAGs while Mulligan has gone home empty-handed at both. Perhaps Mulligan can earn a BAFTA award from her Blighty brethren, but it appears the Oscars are down to a race between Streep and Bullock and Bullock currently has the edge with very little else ahead of us to give Streep any additional momentum.
However, I'll save further Oscar prediction chatter for later next week and simply give you the results from tonight's SAG Awards. Very Pleased that Basterds , Bullock , Bridges were the big winners, my personal winners also, loved Bullock's Speech…a better night that the Critics Choice!
I guess this is Sandra's time to win the OSCAR, Meryl Streep is a legend, yes, but The Blind Side is one of a lifetime achievement for Sandra Bullock. Meryl most of the time being nominated for a role she was playing in so her winning another OSCAR is certain ( I think her record breaking alone for the most nominated actor is already a huge triumph, even if it's way overdue about winning it)
Plus, the Blind Side makes more than 220 million in US alone, which means audience loves the film and HER…. For the rest is predictable… Congrats Sandra
Can only agree.
I was just getting to accept Sandra Bullock as a somewhat worthy nomination, but if she wins over Streep, Mulligan and Sidibe who are all so much better then her, I may end up crying a little. The fact that the Blind Side has made so much money is utterly disturbing.
@Kid: You may be crying but I will be cheering. Go Sandra!
It's clear the SAGs are a joke. Let's be honest here. Sandra Bullock should have not even been nominated for an award. The performance in The Blind Side was not great at all. It was one-note and there are probably a thousand better actresses who would of gave a better performance than her in the part. She can't act! She plays herself over and over again. However, Sandra Bullock is likeable, and the Blind Side has grossed over $200 million dollars. They are giving her this award for being Miss Congeniality and because there are plenty of people who are jealous of Meryl Streep's talent. Streep should of won the award hands down. But this is par for the course for Streep. Everytime she's up for an oscar someone finds an excuse not to give it to her. The performances don't actually count. (It's always someone elses time to win, or they knit-pick her performance but don't subject the other performances through the same scrutiny—like last year.) Streep should probably have at least 8 oscars by now. Once again, Hollywood loses more credibility at these award shows.
@buddy: so what, aren't they supposed to be judging the performances, not giving out the Miss Congeniality award. Bullock did not even deserve to be nominated. It's a joke.
As streep said when she won SAG last year for Doubt," there's no such thing as BEST actress", I don't think anyone would agree that Sandra Bullock performance in The Blind Side is not worthy any praise. All of the nominees are great, the problem with whose better is very subjective.
It's clear that Sandra's performance was moving, I saw the movie and it moved me, everytime she was on screen, she stole every scene (just as Streep does in Julie and Julia).
I want for Streep to win, I do, but if Sandra win the OSCAR, I salute her because it is also well deserved.
Regards from Indonesia
@buddy: She did not give an academy award performance in this movie. Bullock's award is not well-deserved. The woman cannot act. There are many other performances that did not get nominated that are more worthy than hers. You may have thought the movie was moving, but let's be honest here, she is being rewarded for being nice and likeable. She basically gives the same performance over and over again. She's not really an actress. To compare her performance with Streep's performance is like comparing a toy car to a Ferrari. It's debauchery. And to watch Meryl Streep continually lose to women who want to play dress-up and pretend to be actresses is an outrage!!!!!!!!! If you think that Bullock gave a spectacular peformance in that movie, you are devoid of any taste and should not comment or vote on performances. This is ridiculous!
@Gb: chill out dude..
Sorry but I have to agree with Gb and Kid here but I have to say thinking that its between Streep for Julie and Julia and Bullock for The Blind Side is kind of embarrassing. Both actresses were fine in their films but they were also something so cold, calculated. (I'm sorry Gb but the SOLE reason for a Meryl Streep is getting awards for Julie and Julia is because she's Meryl Streep and you know it.)
Add that you have Mulligan and Sidibe getting consistently ignored for both these two and I begin to wonder whether they make these choice just so they can get on those "What the hell were they thinking?" oscar lists.
As far as I'm concerned the fact that oscars are pulling this complete 180 from last year just to seem hip with the mainstream just proves how meaningless they really are.
I sense the academy giving a nomination to an unknown. Based on previous years there's always one that comes out of nowhere that gets a nomination.
I sense That Evening Sun coming out of nowhere. You have Hal Halbrook as an Oscar contender, should we be suprised if somehow Mia Wasikowska could be nominated and, god forbid, win. Great for her but not so great for anybody placing bets. Mia Wasikowska is nominated in the Independant Spirit Awards, can lightning strike twice for her?
@buddy:
I can't believe Sandra Bullock is sweeping awards when GWYNETH PALTROW (Two Lovers) is not even nominated. Gywenth Paltrow gave a tremendous performance in the movie, but then again, JOAQUIN PHOENIX (who I believe to be the Best Actor of the year) isn't nominated either.
And Buddy, I challenge you to explain me why you believe that Sandra Bullock is worthy of the nomination. Because, I honestly believe that Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer), Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Marion Cotillard (Nine), Zooey Saldaña (Avatar), Maggie Gylenhaal (Crazy Heart), Audrey Taotou (Coco Before Chaneel) and especially Gwyneth Paltrow (Two Lovers) were much more captivating and masterful performances than Sandra Bullock's average portrayal in The Blind Side.
Overall, Sandra Bullock was "GOOD" but just as good as any Lifetime/Hallmark movie's acting.
In response to Bullock's win, I think she did a much better job in Infamous than The Blind Side.
It's a shame that her role in that one was overlooked for this one. But it seems as if this might turn out to be something of a "thanks-for-all-the-years-of-rom-coms-here's-the-oscar-for-your-one-dramatic-role-that-happened-to-make-bank."
But that's just me.
Sandra Bullock, man….what a joke.
a well deserved win for the Inglourious Basterds.
i still believe meryl streep will win come oscar.
yay for inglourious basterds' win, my favorite/top film for 2009.
@John Debono: That is almost exactly what I've been thinking, Sidibe and Mulligan have given probably the two best female performances of this year yet they are becoming known as also rans, it's pathetic. I like the Academy Awards and try my hardest not to diss them, but if Bullock wins I may lose all remaining hope. I think Streep was very good in Julie and Julia and if it means no win for Bullock then I'm rooting for her, but her performance is over the top, it's a fun performance with a good accent, it's not the best of the year. I'm gonna be praying that the Streep and Bullock votes cancel each other out and Mulligan or Sidibe sneak through for the win.
kudos to christoph waltz and Inglourious Basterds, trully the year's best.
Interesting, The Hurt Locker won at the PGA's…we now have an interesting race on our hands.
@alex: As I previously stated before, I will be happy if Meryl Streep win for Best Actress but there were "almost clear sign" that THE JURY from 3 prestigious award thinks that Sandra should win. I don't understand the politics in this kind of award however I believe that Sandra Bullock win wasn't as controversial as Halle Berry won the Oscar at 2002. I just gave an opinion here. I saw the Blind Side and I simply love Sandra's character and the way she potrayed her.
About all those actress you mentioned I am agree with you that they also should get some recognition but there were only 5 spot for those, and if Sandra was chosen it means the jury simply love her performance than the others (also people, that's why I gave box office statement before).
Please see IMDb, check all the user comment for The Blind Side, most of them thinks Sandra's performance deserve to get recognition. I believe jury thinks the same way as they all did.
As simple as that, about who is the best, it's very subjective, personally I would love to see Meryl Streep win but if it's turn out to be Sandra Bullock, Sidibe, Mulligan or whoever the person is, I wouldn't mind at all, they all deserved it (that's what I think)
Regards from Indonesia
I for one am sick of all these actors and actresses receiving Oscars and other top accolades simply because they are "owed" them.
Take Kate Winslet last year, her performace in The Reader was certainly exceptional, but by far hardly the best performace from the Best Actress category, in my opinion.
The Oscars go BY YEAR, awarding the best performances from the films released that year and that year alone.
…Well at least that's what I think they SHOULD be doing, not giving it to Winslet for losing out five times before.
Fuck feeling bad for not giving it to them before, start judging by the strengths of their nominated performance from THAT YEAR AND THAT YEAR ALONE.
enough with the bullock haters. . . the fact that sandra bullock has been sweeping all the precursor major awards so far (critics choice, SAG and GG) not to mention that the blindside is the first ever movie headlined by a female star to reach $230++ mllion in box office receipt, has to mean something. saying that she is undeserving and that she cannot act is like saying that she has fooled millions of american viewers and almost all the major award giving bodies.
move on. . .
@chris: Do most americans go to see Sandra Bullock for her great acting? No. Is the Blind Side a movie people saw for her performance? Nope. It's an inspirational story about football. Enough said. Is the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress supposed to go for the best performance by an actress? Yes. Did she give the best performance? Not even close.
Sandra Bullock hasn't fooled anyone. She's been given these awards strictly for box office, which pretty much prove that those awards are crap.
You say, the success of box office receipts for the Blind Side has to mean something. It does. Bullock will enjoy a nice salary increase and that's all it should mean.
You move on… This isn't the people's choice awards.
