In a story coming out of Production Weekly we have learned that Eric Bana is set to star in Romulus, My Father, an adaptation of the award-winning memoirs written by Raimond Gaita.

The film will be directed by Richard Roxburgh, the man who played Dracula in Universal's Van Helsing. The script was written by Nick Drake and Columbia Pictures will distribute with an expected release sometime in late 2006.

The Production Weekly article gave a short description of the film, but I was able to find a much better description over at Dymocks Booksellers here. Here is what they had to say:

Raimond Gaita fled his home in his native Yugoslavia at the age of thirteen, and came to Australia with his young wife Christine and their four-year-old son soon after the end of World War II. Tragic events were to overtake them. Raimond Gaita has an extraordinary story to tell about growing up with his father amid the stony paddocks and flowing grasses of country Australia. Written simply and movingly, Romulus, My Father is about how a compassionate and honest man taught his son the meaning of living a decent life. It is about passion, betrayal and madness, about friendship and the joy and dignity of work, about character and fate, affliction and spirituality. No one will read this wonderful book without an enhanced sense of the possibilities of being alive.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in February 2006 in Australia. This marks Roxburgh's first directorial outing.

Bana was last seen in Troy as Hector, and will next be seen in Munich and Lucky You later this year.
