I could have seen this at last year's Toronto Film Festival, but scheduling difficulties made it impossible, so it appears once August 17 rolls around I'll finally be able to see for myself if the comparisons to The Others and The Orphange are apt when it comes to the new horror-thriller The Awakening.
Today a second trailer for the film arrives, which stars Rebecca Hall as Florence Cathcart, a woman on a mission to expose all seances as exploitative shams. However, when she is called to a boys' boarding school to investigate a case of the uncanny, she is gradually forced to confront her skepticism in the most terrifying way, shaking her scientific convictions and her sense of self to the very core.
Co-starring alongside Hall are Dominic West and Imelda Staunton in a film directed by Nick Murphy. Check out the latest trailer below and see what you think.
This isn't even out in the US yet? It's been on dvd in the UK for months now.
Yep, the comparisons are apt enough in terms of what the film aims for, but unfortunately it isn't as strong as either of those films. For me the final twist needed too much suspension of disbelief to be able to swallow it, and the colour palette was too washed out. But, to give her her due, Rebecca Hall was solid and there were one or two genuine chill moments along the way.
It's just a shame about it as a whole.
About time this gets a U.S release. Been wanting to check it out for awhile; had almost forgot about it.
Winchester is right on the money. It's a movie you'd like to be a bit more scary/eerie than it is, sort of like how Don't Be Afraid of the Dark ended up being.
I've never heard of this before. As long as it's not another "horror comedy". We more true blue, quality horror films.
When I saw the title, I thought this was an upcoming adaptation of the Kate Chopin novel.
