You're Trapped on a Desert Island. You Get Five Movies. What Five Do You Take?

You won't believe how difficult this list is to come up with

Now where did I put my DVD player?

There is a reason people who watch a lot of movies have a hard time telling you what their favorite movie is… IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! I know this is just a silly little article I have put together and it really doesn't mean much, but for some reason I take things like this seriously and this was the single hardest list I have had to put together. As a matter of fact I'm still not entirely confident it reflects what I may say should someone ever leave me stranded on a desert island and be caring enough to let me choose five movies to watch for the rest of my life (or at least until I rope myself a couple of sea turtles and escape on a raft). But can anyone ever be sure of such things when it comes to their favorite movies?

As far as the decision process and choosing five films, a major factor in the process was staying away from films that were too somber. I mean, I'm already stranded on a desert island, who wants to watch a depressing movie over and over again?

So, to put my list together I began looking at dialogue driven films, action films I felt held up to repeated viewings, films from a favorite actor/actress/director and some that just lightened the mood a little.

I have listed my five choices with a bit of reasoning as to why each was chosen directly below along with three alternates for each (you know, just in case my kidnapper's DVD collection is missing a title or two). After checking out my list, think on it for a minute and share your list in the comments below. It's a wild exercise if you try and take it seriously.

Before Sunset (2004)
This list isn't in any specific order, but the more and more I think on it Richard Linklater's Before Sunset is slowly becoming one of the ten-or-so films I list when asked what my favorite movies are. I could watch this movie (as well as its predecessor Before Sunrise) on a loop and never tire of it. I love everything about this movie and it was the only real no-brainer on this list.

Of course, my alternates are three personal favorites as well, but they just can't stand up to Before Sunset in this case.

Three Alternates: Breathless (1960), Love Actually (2003), Amelie (2001)

The Thing (1982)
I went back-and-forth between The Thing and Alien on this one and went with The Thing only because I felt it had more of a popcorn feel to it and therefore would live up to an excess of multiple viewings slightly more, but in truth I wouldn't complain with either selection. A Clockwork Orange would also be a satisfying alternative merely for the film's genius script and McDowell's performance not to mention everything else I love about that film. And finally, it's a hard commitment to make, but Rebecca is close to being my favorite Hitchcock feature… close

Three Alternates: Alien (1979), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Rebecca (1940)

Rear Window (1954)
My favorite Hitchcock is undoubtedly Rear Window. This wasn't a hard film to add to the list with the talent of Hitch at the helm, Stewart in the passenger's seat and Grace Kelly's beauty and talent diverting our attention.

As for the alternates this time around, Dr. Strangelove actually came close to being my selection only because I felt it was one of the only comedies I respect enough and continue to laugh at that would hold up to a lifetime of lonely island viewing. It's a hard one to leave behind.

Three Alternates: Casablanca (1942), Dr. Strangelove (1964), Manhattan (1979)

Chinatown (1974)
Roman Polanski's Chinatown narrowly edged out Blade Runner in this case. While Blade Runner is a film worth exploring over and over again, the atmosphere and performances found in Chinatown made for what I believed to be the best moody addition to the list. Strangely enough, I didn't actually like Blade Runner the first time I saw it and am starting to absolutely love it… perhaps if I took it on my island retreat I would end up calling it Wilson and damn near lose my mind… Perhaps it's best I leave it behind.

In the alternates, Kurosawa's Yojimbo was nipping on the heels of Blade Runner and would have been a great addition (not to mention a little more comedy) and if it ever came to it, perhaps a movie I would regret leaving behind.

Three Alternates: The Godfather: Part II (1974), Blade Runner (1982), Yojimbo (1961)

Spirited Away (2002)
I needed an animated film and it came down to selecting between Pixar, old school Disney and the unique stylings of Hayao Miyazaki. I would be happy with any of these four selections, but in terms of repeated viewings, a Miyazaki feature seems like the obvious choice. Had I had more alternates My Neighbor Totoro would have been next on the list… probably followed by WALL•E, but the number two film just missing out on the top spot was Disney's Robin Hood… I really do love that film.

Three Alternates: Aladdin (1992), Robin Hood (1973), Ratatouille (2007)

So there you have it. You're stranded on an island, all the rum is gone and you get five films to accompany you for eternity… What five do you choose? Comment below.

I just noticed that I've picked many of the second installments of franchises. Weird huh?

1)The night in the Opera;Alternates:Singin in the Rain,Full Metal Jacket,The Longest Yard.

The Marx Bros. movies roxx…its too funny and i can carry them all if i am living in an island. If i dont get them i think Singin in the Rain is the best substitute though i believe its much bigger than Sam Wood's movie but i am really in awe of the Max Bros.

2)The Good,the bad and the ugly;Alternates:Sergio Leone's westerns or any Ford-Wayne Westerns.

The Wild gunfights is my favourite genre it will provide me a lot of energy being lonely in an island.

3)One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest;Alternates:Chinatown,As Good as it Gets and Batman.

Jack Nicholson's neurotic and funny characters are my favs..i cant give them a miss..

4)Blair Witch Project;Alternates:The Shining,The Exorcist,Omen.

If i ever feel to try the Horror movies this will be it.

5)Forrest Gump;Alternates:Scent of a Women,Scarface(Al Pacino),Tootsie.

In an Island u need fun and attitude to live i think my movies fullfill those regulations…lolzz..

@skroegerj:
I think when you consider your choices, you have to pick films that can be watched over and over again with you being able to come away with new and excited views each time you watch it. Otherwise, you'll get bored with each very quick.

With that in mind, mine are:

Donnie Darko
The Fountain
Magnolia
The Shawshank Redemption (my favorite, so I have to take it!)
Man From Earth

Of course, everyone's going to have a different list.

In Bruges (2008) – Have seen it 10+ times and it has never gotten old
Ben-Hur (1959) – Has been one of my favorite movies since I was about 8 years old. Plus it's 4 hours long, so it will kill alot of time.
Across the Universe (2007) – The Beatles are my favorite band and this film combines their music with gorgeous imagery, so….
The Shining (1980) – It's Kubirck, it's trippy, it stays scary.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) – No explanation needed.

Runners Up: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), Seven Samurai (1954), Casino Royale (2006), There Will be Blood (2007), Casablanca (1943)

The Godfather – I have maybe watched this film from start to finish only 4 or 5 times but I've watched large chunks of it on TV hundreds of time and it never gets old, an absolute classic.
Alternates: The Godfather Part II, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver

Pulp Fiction – Along with the alternates my favourite Tarantino films are pretty much in order here
Alternates: Kill Bill (The Whole Bloody Affair), Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown

Paths of Glory – Kubrick was a genious and an expert of the craft of filmmaking, all of his films display the meticulous detail he would put into every shot. All these films are great but Paths of Glory is definitely my personal favourite.
Alternates: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange

Boogie Nights – Much like Tarantino, pretty much all of his film techniques come from the great filmmakers of the generations before him but the subjects he deals with keep me coming back. I love what the Coen Brothers do as well so they creep in with two of their great crime films over PT's other two films
Alternates: There Will Be Blood, Fargo, Blood Simple

The Incredibles – Animation and Superheroes together, what more could you ask for? I'm a total Pixar junkie and arguably I think Wall-E is a better film but The Incredibles lends itself better to repeated viewings for me.
Alternates: Wall-E, Iron Giant, The Dark Knight

Moulin Rouge
My all-time favorite and gotta say that it is one of the movies that if I am bored in my house I just start watching over and over again. Never get tired of it.

Alternates: Australia, Up, I am David.

In Bruges
This movie caught me on my deeper side just because of the incredible performance of Colin Farrel. Dialogue is hilarious and the score is perfect for the theme of the movie.

Alternates: V for Vendetta, The Dark Knight, Pan's Labyrinth.

Hot Fuzz
Funniest. Movie. ON. Earth.

Alternates: Shaun of the Dead, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Stardust
A fairy tale for adults is what I will call this. It have unicorns, witches and all that kind of stuff but still with that. I love it, I can't stop watching it.

Alternates: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Crash, Magnolia

Love, Actually.
Incredible story, great performances, everything good in this movie. This is the kind of movie that I love, love stories with cool dialogue. This doesn't have as good dialogue as favorites for me such as Before Sunset and Garden State but still with that, I just love it.

Alternates: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Lost in Translation, Garden State, Amelie.

My all time fave: The Empire Strikes Back
My epic: Spartacus
My high-brow fare: Richard III (1955)
My guilty pleasure: Rush Hour
My old buddies: Casablanca

The Empire Stirkes Back (favorite film and OST)
LOTR: FOTR EE
The Shining
Boogie Nights
Aliens: Director's Cut

These films are my top six, minus my #4 (Suspiria), which I love, though I prefer The Shining for horror and I need a Cameron film.

1, Showgirls: Awful movie but top notch nakedness if you were alone
2, Rocky 4: Best motivational soundtrack ever to help you build that raft
3, Castaway: A top class guild to survival (how to draw a face on a volleyball)
4, Natural Born Killers Collecters Edition: Comes in a box so big you could use as a raft
5, Swept Away: when all else fails watch this and you will be ready to swim home
and sod the raft.

In order:

1) The Godfather (for the sake of diversity I'm leaving off "Godfather Part II" even though I feel it's the better film. It would just feel really weird to have Part II and no original.)

2) Kagemusha (One of the movies that I love to death but never really make the time to watch all that often. With the time, it might become even more loved)

3) The Big Lebowski (I will laugh at it everytime I watch it. Guaranteed. It's just so damn good)

4) Snatch (Just a fantastic movie. Ritchie hasn't caught my attention all that much since but he really killed it on this one)

5) Rocky (As a Philly native, it's basically the Bible on film)

Six Alternates (no order):
Watchmen (I don't care what you say, I love it so much)

Apocalypse Now (I'm a Coppola whore)

The Shawshank Redemption (For those days when you need a good "Man-Cry")

Collateral (Just a fantastic film)

The King of Comedy (I'm in the minority again in not loving a whole lot of Scorsese, but this is just a great one)

The Wrestler (I actually don't need the whole movie, you can just give me a highlight reel of Marisa Tomei's stripping scenes. If I'm on an island all alone, this is going to be very useful after a while.)

Jaws – It's a horror film, it's a character study. What's up with Quint, why did he smash the radio? Survivor guilt? Something else?
We're No Angels – The interplay between Aldo Ray, Peter Hustinov, and Humphrey Bogart is just too much fun!
Empire Strikes Back – I'm a sci-fi chick and this is my fix. The best of the franchise.
Firefly – Not Serenity because I just can't take the death of Wash. If you're going to strand me on a desert island I demand an exception and that is the complete series of Firefly. Brown coats forever!

Remember that part in "Our Town" where the woman is given an opportunity to come back for one day? Don't pick a special day, she's told. An ordinary day will be too dear to bear. So I'm overintellecualizing this exercise, I know. But any film you take with you will lose its charm and become associated with the the deprivation. So be careful what you choose. These have to be more than intertaining. They must speak to you of something in your life and/or you past that will comfort. Just saying.

#1 "To Kill a Mockingbird" because it has not only been one of my favorites, but was so dear to my eldest daughter that, when she began dating as a teenager, she would bring her new young man home to show it to him. It was her litmus test. If he made fun of it, he was a goner. Most young men had the sense to sit quietly through this experience.

#2 "12 Angry Men" because I not only love that film but I think I could see the part of society I would not be missing, the small minded bigots.

#3 "All About Eve" I would have to have a Bette Davis and this one holds up big time.

#4 "The Way of the Gun" funniest beginning of any film ever. Always makes me laugh so hard I fall over. And the bitter edge of the plot of this film would probably match my bitterness after being kidnapped.

#5 "Indecision 2004" I know, I know, it's segments of a TV show, The Daily Show. I wouldn't want to spend too much time away from Jon Stewart's humor. I'd need a good laugh and ordinary comedies can get so old after a while.

Back up: For no particular reason other than I'd need something else to look for if any of the above were not in my kidnapper's stash, and I enjoy these.

"The Visitor"
"Capote"
"Crash"
"Gosford Park"
