'X-Men: First Class' Goes All 'Gossip Girl'

Creator of 'The O.C.' and 'Gossip Girl' gets mutant gig

In a not-so-surprising bit of news 20th Century Fox has continued their trend of staying away from risky and sticking to conventional by hiring "The O.C." and "Gossip Girl" creator Josh Schwartz to write a screenplay for X-Men: First Class, a film that will center on the students at Professor Xavier's Institute for Higher Learning. Such characters are assumed to include Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat. However, it could also mean they are going way back in time and we will see Wolverine, Storm, Jean Gray and Cyclops as first year students.

Fox is already set to release X-Men Origins: Wolverine in May next year and is also working on a similar, origin story spin-off for Magneto, the character played by Ian McKellen in the first three X-Men films. The Magneto feature would likely be a great place to transition into an origin story of the Xavier Institute as X-Men 3 already showed Magneto and Xavier working together at one point to help troubled mutant children before Magneto went rogue.

The Variety article announcing X-Men: First Class also reminds us of the potential Deadpool spin-off based on the character played by Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine. After seeing the preview reel of Wolverine at Comic Con there was also a little bit with Gambit, so who knows what cards Fox may have up their sleeves. One thing's for certain, it's not a break from tradition.

The only way I can see Fox digging themselves out of the hole they created for themselves in 2008 with an endless slate of films that inspire zero confidence is to stop going the traditional route when it comes to their films. All of their films of late have such cookie cutter molds they fit into that there is very little surprise. Sure, they are glossy and sleak, but when it comes to substance and content they are empty. Josh Schwartz may be a good choice when you are you need a dramatic TV pilot filled with teen angst and self-loathing, but the world of comicbook films has started to shift to where people are expecting more. I can't imagine them skating by with another B-level director shooting a tweener script.

Sorry but when it comes to Marvel I am a bit of a fanboy. So here we go:

X-First class should not have Wolverine or Angel in it. Wolverine was added to the x-men in the first movie long after Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm were students and Angel didn't come into play until the third movie.
In the books the first x-men were Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Jean Grey.
Other early members are Colossus, who is only a student in the films just like Iceman and Nightcrawler who's introduced in X2.
I'm curious to see how they make Fist class consistent with the movies not using Wolverine for instance.
It would be a mistake to suddenly follow the comics more closely after changing things for the other movies.

I found it a shame they didn't hint at the past relationship between Victor Creed (Sabretooth) and Wolverine in the first movie allready. It could've added more mistery to Wolverine's past.

A teen drama writer? Doesn't sound to good allright.
It has allways been Marvel's strength that their hero's were people with feelings and emotions but you need the all out action as well.
Perhaps if he co-wrote with a different writer.

I actually think Josh Schwartz is a really good choice just based on the TV work he's done. And he's done action (or, at least, I'm presuming it's action…). He's the creator of the series "Chuck" on NBC, which, although I've never watched it, I'm betting it has action in it as a spy show.
But Schwartz has definitley cornered the teen drama market, and I won't lie: he's good. While The OC and Gossip Girl may be soapy, they are fun, dramatic, and just all around very good. He's a good writer. He'll be able to handle the high school stuff really, really well. Yah, X-Men seems like an odd pairing, but, still. I like it.

well, i think it'll be fine. josh does chuck which is kind of nerdy. he'll be able to pull this off. and i most definitely don't think he's gonna turn this into a gossip girl or the o.c. episode. he'll do fine. i'm assuming he's not THAT stupid to eff up x-men… just let it go. he'll do well. ^_^

@rattler76:
what they should do is NOT have it connected to the past three movies and maybe look at a perfectly good storyline all laid out for them already. what kind of fanboy are you exactly to say angel should not be in this? He's kinda like oh, one of the main characters, one of the first in the x-men team. Are you only a "marvel fanboy" through the movies? screw what the movies did, if they have the nerve to NOT make Colossus Russian then i say they should just stop what they were doing in the mess that was X-3 and instead of this downward spiral, rewind back to a story's origin, IN ITS COMIC. it would be the best thing for this franchise to follow the comic closer. I feel better now.

i agree with -rattler76 first post , wolverine and angel should not be in this new movie, they came in way after all the others were in the school, so to have angel and wolverine in the new x-men is really stupid and then it makes you very very confused, and it would really ruin the whole series and then x-men will go down the drain like c.s.i (newer version without grisom) like honestly people don't know x-men any more D:<

I didnt have a problem with the first 3 x-men movies but the third kinda confused me. I wasn't a close follower of X-men and didn't really know that much about it aside from the fact that the Juggernaut was Professor X's brother, and some other things like Scott being…..on that note..now i have a problem with the third movie..i didn't even go see the Wolverine Origins..I wish there was a way that they could SOMEHOW start the x-men movie saga over entirely..they could do SO much better. I would love to see a great movie again. its been so long =/
