Great article and thought provoking. My connection with Manhattan was rather accentuated because a friend of that time had also had to deal with his wife leaving him for another woman.
I don't think Manhattan is either the best film or my favourite film, but I am remarkable fickle about both of those - who isn't? I delight in those films which can move me and give me some little inexplicable insight in how to keep my balance in this trivial but wonderful life of mine.

I've only seen it now and it's just gorgeous. For some reason I still rate Play It Again Sam and Annie Hall higher, maybe because I saw them earlier. They are all similar, but still stand out in their own right and never cease to move me.

Brilliant.

I think you mean Before Sunrise. Before Sunset is the sequel set in Paris 9 years later.

This is, along with Annie Hall, one of his two best films in my book. Though I admit I have not yet seen VCB. I watched it twice in one night the first time I saw it. Love that Gershwin stuff and you managed to quote my favorite line in the movie. Good show!
