I couldn't agree more. I remember reading Bourne Identity and as I was reading I was like, "How the hell are they going to turn this into a movie?" That book was far too detailed and the storyline was way too big for a movie. However, I thought they did a great job of keeping with the spirit of the novel. With I Am Legend I have that sneaking suspicion that it deviated way off course... I guess I will find out in a couple of hours...

Akiva Goldsman was involved? As we learned from his adaptation of The DaVinci Code, this will not go well. I'm of the opinion that if you're deviating that far from the book, don't bother pretending to be an adaptation. It's not like I Am Legend is the only vampire story in existence.

I think that at the very least, adaptations have to preserve the spirit and overall tone of their source material. The best example of how you can deviate while still being a faithful adaptation is the Jason Bourne movies. The books were written in the 80s, and are Cold War thrillers that not only focus on Bourne dealing with his identity, but also a terrorist named Carlos the Jackal. The details in the movies are extremely different from the books, but they still keep the basic mysteries and are very, very true to the spirit of the books. I think this is the farthest a movie should ever stray from its source material.
