Will Smith Clears the 'Oldboy' Air
It's based on the comic, not the movie, as if that makes a difference

FilmSchoolRejects got a bit of news regarding the Oldboy remake that Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Poseidon) has been commissioned to pen for director Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith. Well, actually up until now it was a project Smith and Spielberg were circling as a possible feature to use as a working debut for the director and helmer. FSR's Brian C. Gibson not only got word that Smith actually is starring in the film should it get made, but that it isn't necessarily the remake the trade papers were selling.
On the red carpet premiere of Smith's upcoming Seven Pounds Gibson got the scoop straight from the star himself who said:
We're looking at that right now. Not the film though, it's the original source material. There's the original comics of ‘Oldboy' that they made the first film from. And that's what we're working from, not an adaptation of the film…
Yeah, so it isn't going to be a remake of Chan-wook Park's Oldboy as previously assumed. Instead it is a new title based on the comic books that inspired Park's feature.
I have not read the comic books and I can pretty much guarantee you I never will, but I have to assume this doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot considering Park's feature was also based on Nobuaki Minegishi's comics. I would still expect this to be a much lighter fare than the previous feature and still remain skeptical. Just because they aren't technically remaking the film itself it is still "Oldboy".
