Will Robert Rodriguez Actually Ever Direct Any of the Films He's Attached To?
We will never know until production actually starts

I am repeating my headlines almost word-for-word and not realizing it as I used a similar headline back in February when it was announced Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct Nerverackers for the Weinstein Co. At that time I asked how he would find time to meet an April 16, 2010 release date for that film while also making Red Sonja, Barbarella, Woman in Chains!, Jetsons, Conan, Madman and Sin City 2? Of course, I also forgot to mention Machete, the blade-wielding antihero who appeared in a mock trailer that was part of Grindhouse played by Danny Trejo, which is the source of new information coming out of IESB.net and Variety.
The news first hit the Internet today when IESB reported a Rodriguez quote from a news conference the director held at Troublemaker Studios saying, "I'm going to be able to shoot my upcoming Machete here [in Austin], a sci-fi action film called Nerverackers, a re-boot of the Predator series called Predators, and a couple of smaller movies called Sin City 2 and The Jetsons."
You get all that? He is actually going to do that while standing on his head with one hand tied behind his back!
Seriously though, Rodriguez is attached to so many projects it is impossible to tell what's actually going to happen and what is just talk in an effort to get his name in the news circulation — a trick I assume he learned from his good friend Quentin Tarantino.
However, Variety seems confident Rodriguez will begin work on Machete this June and will co-direct with Ethan Maniquis, his longtime editor. I expect Trejo will reprise the role as Machete, a Mexican ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, and is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator.
As for the news I am sure you noticed in that quote regarding a new Predator film called Predators, Variety adds to the story saying Rodriguez scripted what is being referred to as a "re-boot" for 20th Century Fox, but other than that there is really nothing to tell, which leads me to believe this is a project we may never hear from again.
Rodriguez has Shorts coming to theaters on August 7 and should he begin work on Machete in June it will most likely be in the can come time for press rounds for Shorts, which means we should expect a full update in July based on the speed this guy works with. So stay tuned.
