Will Ricky Gervais Host the Oscars? Probably Not, but Golden Globes? Yup!

Mark down January 17 on your calendars

Last year Ricky Gervais' name came up as a potential host for the 2009 Oscars following his appearance at the Emmy's that year (watch to the right). Obviously that never came to fruition with Hugh Jackman taking on hosting duties and knocking it out of the park, but Gervais' name was back in the conversation this year, but again it looks like it won't happen, but for good reason.

Today it was announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that Gervais will host "The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards" on Sunday, January 17, 2010 on NBC.

Gervais was quoted in today's press release saying, "Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down."

This quote makes sense since after his name was brought up in relation to the Oscars last year he told the BBC, "I don't think I'd get the freedom I needed… If it was a fun night and they said you could ad-lib, I'd do it because I really enjoy that."

He added, "No-one's there to hear jokes, they're there to see if they've won an Oscar… If it was a fun night and they said you could ad-lib, I'd do it because I really enjoy that." He referred to the task as a "thankless act".

So I guess we will be left to wonder if we will see Jackman once again at the Oscars, but we can now look forward to January 17 with a bit more anticipation.

Do the Golden Globes normally have a host? I didn't think they did

I am definitely looking forward to this. I think Gervais' reasoning is very sound in terms of being able to improvise more at the Golden Globes. It is, to me at least, a more laid back ceremony than the Oscars, and he seems like the perfect personality for it.

@Danny K.: I agree. I like this a lot better than Gervais hosting the Oscars. While it certainly would have been fun to have him at the Academy Awards, I think the Golden Globes suits his personality and approach better.

I've just seen Ricky doing his latest stand-up show 'Science'. As ever he was pretty funny – though a lot of the material was a re-hash of his earlier work. As a host for the Golden Globes he'd be well worth watching!
