Who's The Mummy's Real Evie? Weisz or Bello?

Just one of my problems with this third movie

Cinematical has put up nine new boring-as-hell images from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. One of them is the picture of Maria Bello just above as the new Evelyn "Evie" O'Connell. Bello replaces Rachel Weisz in the film as Weisz refused to return to reprise the role. For me, this is a problem.

This isn't a problem because I don't like Maria Bello. I actually like Maria Bello. She is a talented and gorgeous actress, but, based on the first two Mummy films I saw, she is not Evie.

This also doesn't mean that I think Weisz makes or breaks the film. It means, if she wasn't willing to come back to a role she seemed to enjoy playing and even said back in September of 2006:

I know there's a new script but I haven't read it yet. Nothing's definite yet and should the film be done, it's probably going to happen next summer. And if so, I would definitely like to be in it.
Well, she read it, and from what I can guess, it stunk. Why else wouldn't she return? Don't tell me scheduling conflicts because what production wouldn't work around Weisz's schedule to have her back as the female LEAD?

Maybe I am making too much of this and the film will be good popcorn fun. I hope so. I would love to add it to my collection and seal the trilogy. I love watching the first two films as mindless departures from reality and I would hate it if a third film slightly tainted my memory of the franchise. I was able to slough off The Scorpion King because it wasn't exactly "part of the franchise" but this one is called The Mummy making it a little harder to do.

They should have written Weisz out of the script. Her character was the first role that opened my eyes to her and she definitely owned it in the first film. What I remember from the second film, she had more action sequences but I felt she was still underused. It sucks that she turned this one down, because it would have made me want to watch it. I feel Maria Bello, as good an actress she is, makes the character look more tough and 'menacing' than she usually is.

Scratch all that, they should have just left the first film alone and moved on.

Yup, the first one was the best. The second had too much going on, and this one is gonna suck I feel.

I actually enjoy both of them. The Nefertit/Evie tie-in in the second one was a little off, but I still enjoy it as a diversion. It's not really as if either one of them are actually "good" films, but as mindless entertainment they work.
