Who is Scott Hoffman and Did He Even Watch 'The Spirit'?

This is the craziest trailer I have seen yet...

Photo: Lionsgate

I must say thanks to Peter at SlashFilm as he managed to find the trailer I was unable to as one critic has called The Spirit "Brilliant," "Jaw-Dropping" and "One of the best films of the year." I was searching all over YouTube for this thing all day after seeing it numerous times this weekend. The greatest thing is how the voice over guy refers to the person saying these things as "critics" – plural – when it turns out to be someone named Scott Hoffman from MoviePictureFilm.com. Ahhh, what a way to get your name in a trailer eh? However, I can't blame Hoffman, my problem here is with Lionsgate saying "critics". Hoffman can have his opinion, I just disagree with it, but insinuating the film is some kind of critical success is a flat out lie.

In my opinion Frank Miller's The Spirit is not brilliant, not jaw-dropping, is definitely not one of the best films of the year and when Hoffman's quotes end by saying "It will blow you away," I don't think I need to tell you my thoughts on the matter.

Hoffman does not have a published review of the film so he must have been cornered by a Lionsgate publicist (perhaps at gun point) and asked for a pull quote, or two, or three, or four and this is the result. What a joke, I have no problem with someone liking this film, but this is adulation to the point of absurdity and I believe anyone that has also seen this film would agree with me.

See, you can't oversell it like that. They should have been using pull quotes like, "It wasn't as bad as I was expecting!" "You won't fall asleep!" "The best movie of the year starring Gabriel Macht!" Then people might buy it.

Alternatively, you take the reviews that give it mixed praise and just edit out the bad stuff. So when Mike Goodridge at Screen International says "Frank Miller's first solo effort as a director is an entertaining, if forgettable, cinematic imagining of Will Eisner's classic superhero The Spirit," you advertise it as "an entertaining (insert almost invisible bracketed ellipsis to indicate omission) cinematic imagining of Will Eisner's classic superhero." Ta-da! Not too much, and a real critic said it!

I am avoiding it unless it gets a 80% on the tomato-meter or Brad gives it a B+

My movies for the weekend are Benjamin Button & Valkyrie!

I e-mailed him with the subject line "Are Your Real?" and said "because no critic seemed to like The Spirit but you."

This is what he replied:

Hey Taylor,

Oh yeah, I'm real and I did love The Spirit.

I don't mind being in the minority though- I think the film will be playing midnight shows as other cult classics have like Donnie Darko for example, in a few years. I just think people aren't used to the fact that superhero films can still be outrageous and different like this movie.

Thanks for reading.

Scott

There you go. I guess.

Maybe Hoffman can write a response" "Who Is Brad Everett and Why Does He Feel the Need to Crap on Another Critic For a Review With Which He Disagrees?"
Subhead: "Everett Should Learn To Do More Research Since the Review Exists Online"

If you'll notice, moviepicturefilm.com has also nominated The Spirts for its "2008 moviepicturefilm awards" Best Picture Award… hmmmm… maybe this website's getting some serious money from Lionsgate.

moviepicturefilm looks like one of the most stupid, self-indulgent and amateurish blogs to ever hit the blogsphere in recent memory. Who can trust a website that ran just 6 reviews in 2008? All of those reviews, including his review of The Spirit, are poorly written to say the least. Anyone who trusts a quote or a review from lousy blog from now on can be officially considered as an idiot.

I know Scott for many years he tries his best. Wants to get invited to do more coverage so sometimes the critics need to give some leeway, but he tries.
