Who is Jonny Quest and Should I Care Zac Efron is Playing Him?

Is this the real reason Efron bailed on Footloose?

Wikipedia tells me "Jonny Quest" is a 1964 science fiction/adventure animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and created and designed by comic book artist Doug Wildey, about Jonny Quest, a boy who accompanies his father on extraordinary adventures. Hero Complex tells me Zac Efron (High School Musical) will play Jonny Quest in a feature film adaptation for Warner Bros. with Dwayne Johnson circling the project and may possibly play the brawny version of pilot and man-of-action Race Bannon.

Geoff Boucher at "Hero Complex" points out the casting may not sit well with fans since Quest was only 11-years-old in the cartoon and Efron is the ripe young age of 21. However, Boucher, a confessed fan of Quest, seems optimistic saying, "I myself think it's a surprising but interesting choice, and I'm one of the people in town who think Efron (like Justin Timberlake) has a big future ahead of him and that people will look back on his frothy Disney duty as just the early steps in the choreography of his career."

The script by Dan Mazeau was featured on the 2008 Black List (a list of what is considered to be the best, unproduced scripts in Hollywood), but word is the failure of Speed Racer to gain traction with audiences has held up the project. Boucher even says Warner Bros. has plans of ditching the title "Jonny Quest" as to attempt to completely separate itself from any comparison to Speed Racer.

Obviously I have no idea what "Jonny Quest" actually entails outside of the little video I included in this post for those that may be just as curious as me, but I am all up for another adventure series of films, especially with Boucher's comparisons of "Quest" to Milton Canniff, Ian Fleming and Rudyard Kipling.

Anyone out there familiar with the cartoon care to talk about their thoughts of a live-action adaptation and the casting of Efron?

As a kid, I remember watching syndicated reruns of the 60s' original show in the mid-late 90s' and while I thought that was so-so, I found the new version of the series titled 'The REAL Adventures of Jonny Quest' aired on Cartoon Network to be pretty awesome. Of course, I was only ten back then so I guess I was easy to impress but I remember many episodes having excellent plotlines , concept and the animation was excellent. Also, in that series, Jonny Quest and his pals were older, possibly 16-17, if I remember correctly. But I still don't think Efron could pull this off. If the movie is going to be closer to the new series, it would be some serious PG-13 stuff, more along the lines of the television show Supernatural, with more elements of action and sci-fi but fantasy and horror wouldn't be totally ignored. If they are going for the feel of the 60s' show, then I think Efron is appropriate. Also, in that case the movie would bomb. It should be modeled after the radically different 90s' series, not the campy 60s' one.

I'm a huge fan of Jonny Quest! While the 60's version was so-so, 'The real adventures of Jonny quest' was pure awesomeness. The beginning credits with the cool 3D stuff was amazing. The title theme that played against the 3D animation was brilliant too (it was a rehash of the 60s version, only much cooler).

I think nostalgia will pull in a LOT of people to the theatres. My friends and I used to watch it every single day on Cartoon Network… blv it or not we have the Jonny Quest title theme audio clip stored in our cellphones :)

As pointed out by 'Vik' most of the episodes of the new series had really good plots. They weren't just 'cartoons for the kids' but truly sci-fi/spy/thriller movie-like. Oh and the idea stepping into virtual reality was excellent…and was much before 'Matrix' came out. In fact 'Matrix' reminded me of 'Jonny Quest' and all of us thought the Wachowskis lifted the idea from 'JQ'.

I wonder who's playing 'Hadji', 'Jessie' and 'Surd'. Also Robert Patrick (who was the villain T-1000 in Terminator 2 had voiced Race Bannon)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the 3D awesomeness. That was probably the first time I had ever seen 3D animation, so I blown away! And like ash, I too thought the idea of stepping into virtual reality was incredibly cool. ash, are you sure JQ was the first show or movie to explore this idea pre-Matrix? I could definitely imagine the Wachowskis being inspired from it then. Which increases Jonny's greatness by ten-fold.

On a side-note, it was wrong of me to call the original series campy because it wasn't really. It must have surely been ground-breaking for a 60's kiddie animated show. Still, much tamer and tackier than the 90's one and if it didn't have an effect on my ten year-old self in the 90's, I highly doubt it exciting anybody now. They should stick to the darker, grittier atmosphere of the new series, if they want to attract any kind of an audience.

All I know about Jonny Quest is he has showed up on Venture Bros. on "Adult Swim" (for sure somewhat based on Jonny Quest) as an adult, and his live was not pretty. Oh, and on "Harvey Birdman", Roger Bannon sued for custody because he did more parenting for him then his father, Dr. Quest.

@ Vik … I really doubt if there was any other show with the Virtual Reality sequences before JQ … even if there was, I don't think the animation would've been as groundbreaking (for that time) as the sequences in JQ.

This was certainly my fav Animated series before 'Starship Troopers' came along. I hope they go ahead with making the movie.

As for people agitated about the JQ movie turning out like 'Speed Racer', they shouldn't worry, because Speed Racer was just dumb fun, and JQ wasn't the least bit dumb.

Zach Efron? I don't know if he'd do justice … maybe I feel that way because i can't stand him and the HSM films.

The Real adventures of Johnny Quest was one of my favourite cartoons growing up, loved the title music and the VR sequences, not sure if this film will be good though. I thoroughly enjoyed Speed Racer and am baffled by the comparison (who cares if was a Sixties cartoon? What will that fact have on the final quality of the film?). Its an American cartoon in the first place, not a Japanese one like Speed Racer or Transformers so i'm sure there's much more awareness of what it is. Despite that i have a feeling that it could be a formulaic family film mainly because there's been so many of them in recent years

I hope they do it off the newer version where they go inside the virtual reality game. Then Zac Efron wouldn't be a bad choice at all.
That show was far better than the original. it would make a very good movie.

Funny, they've always made cartoons of movies like the mentioned Starship Troopers.
Now they've started going the other way.Transformers, Dragonball, The last airbender, GI Joe, Jonny Quest.

Efron is waaaaaay too old for the Johnny Quest role. With his impressive build, why would he need Race Bannon as a body guard? If Hollywood can resist casting a 11/12 year old and NOT make his cutesy precocious, then ok. Otherwise, dont contaminate the memory a great cartoon that appeals to boys of all ages. Recently, I was amused to see the men in our family, fathers in their 40s, a teenager, a ten year old and a 6 year old – in the den watching the old robot eye episode. Every single "boy" watched – mouths agape as the soldiers used machine guns, rifles, flame throwers to stop the eye from escaping. The show – as dated as it is – still has something that appeals to all ages. DOnt louse it up – the way they did with Speed Racer.
