Who are the Greatest All-Time Scream Queens?

No particular order, just some of the best

With this week's release of Jennifer's Body it is inevitable the topic of scream queens will come up, and even if it doesn't… I'm bringing it up, but not in the form of a top ten. I really don't see how you can rank these ladies, or what purpose it would serve as several could take the top spot and the others all coming in a close second. They all bring a little something special to each of their films and remain memorable for their performances.

So I present you a selection of classic scream queens, including all-timers such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Fay Wray, a few of my own favorites and a selection of memorable extras at the very end. However, once you look through my list tell me who I left off and who your favorite scream queens are. I think I've taken care of many of the obvious choices, and hope you have more to add to the conversation.

Fay Wray (King Kong)
We're getting the obvious out of the way from the start and Fay Wray is pretty much known as the very first scream queen and anyone that has seen 1933's original King Kong will never forget her performance.

Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween)
Jamie Lee Curtis is probably the name that comes to mind first or second when it comes to the conversation of scream queens. It's either Curtis or Wray and it simply depends on which generation you belong to, but it's hard to say either would be wrong when deciding on a #1 pick.

Janet Leigh (Psycho)
Then we move to Janet Leigh and I wouldn't begrudge anyone that decided she was their favorite. I mean, when it comes to iconic screams where does Leigh's death in the shower rank?

Linda Blair (The Exorcist)
I just love Linda Blair in The Exorcist and she is truly terrifying, but I wonder would others out there decide on Ellen Burstyn?

Shelley Duvall (The Shining)
Doesn't the picture just say it all? Duvall is a wreck in The Shining and for those that have seen one of the greatest behind-the-scenes docs on the making of this film know she went through hell to bring us this character. How could I leave her off?

Sissy Spacek (Carrie)
Another classic character and performance that simply can't be left out of the conversation when it comes to the topic of the queens that scream.

Aside from all the ones you mentioned (and I absolutely agree on everything you said), the great screamer that immediately comes to my mind is Naomi Watts in PJ's King Kong (I seriously think she deserves the place in your list, and not even an honorable mention). I also rewatched Aliens a couple of days ago, and Newt's scream when she sees the facehugger on her father's face was pretty damn loud, long and memorable. Can't really think of any others, at least not right now.

Marilyn Burns from the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. One of the "screamiest" performances ever. Poor girl, I thought she was going to lose her lungs. But who wouldn't scream like her if Leatherface was chasing you?

Great list, Brad. Nice to see some of my favourites (Shelley Duvall, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sissy Spacek, Mia Farrow) along with great new ones (Neve Campbell, Nicole Kidman). And I agree with Nick above, Naomi Watts should be up there because of King Kong. Amazing work.

Shouldn't scream queens actually need to scream a lot in their movies? =P
Because I don't think Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby does that (even though her performance is terrific!) and Kathy Bates and Linda Blair (also brillant performances) are the villains in their movies, so obviously they don't need to scream that much since they're not being scared, it's the other way around.

Well, whatever, I think all those ladies listed gave great performances, so why not?

And nice you remembered Jessica Biel in the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it doesn't matter if you prefer the original or the new one (I like the remake more), you gotta admit Biel screamed like a true scream queen should! And ran like a marathonist!!

And speaking of remakes, I think it's impossible to remake Misery, because that movie is all about Kathy Bates performance. You can't redo that, I mean not even HER can do that again!! I think it's the best female performance in a horror movie ever.

Great list of fine actresses. The shower scene screams from PSYCHO are unforgettable; fiercely represented by Bernard Herrman's stabbing strings.

For a good slasher movie 'scream queen' parody the opening of De Palma's BLOW OUT with John Travolta is very amusing.

My favourite 'one-off' movie scream of all time is in Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD – when Lionel's Mum is bitten by the Sumatran Rat Monkey. Her scream and subsequent disposal of the beast are hilarious.

Where's Linnea Quigley? About the only thing I DO know about her is that she's been in multiple horror films and has always been called a "Scream Queen".

Just Googled her – her autobiography is 'I'm Screaming as Fast as I Can'.

Btw. What about the actress who played Chrissie in the opening scene of Jaws? She was screaming for a good two minutes, and it was a downright scary and chilling scene, mostly thanks to her.

I completley disagree,
I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is the ultimate scream queen!!!
Her horrors consist of…

- I Know What You Did Last Summer
- Scream 2
- The Grudge
- The Grudge 2
- The Return
- Possession

…And let's be honest, some episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer,
were very scary, i.e. "Hush" or "Killed By Death."
Both episodes were shit scary!
