What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #1
Godard, Scorsese, Scott, Polanski, Malle and more
| Oliver! (1968) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: To think this musical from Carol Reed (The Third Man) won Oscar's Best Picture in 1969 is staggering especially when you think back upon the fact 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't even nominated and Stanley Kubrick lost to Reed for Best Director. Of course, 2001 took a lot of time to gain favor, but it just goes to show how time is the true test of a film's quality.

| Repulsion (1965) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: This is another upcoming Criterion release I will be reviewing in the coming weeks, so I won't say much here. However, here is a clip from the film, which stars Catherine Deneuve as a woman drifting into full on madness. I will say it's one hell of a thriller.

| Say Anything (1989) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: John Cusack is quite the versatile actor isn't he? I wouldn't call him an Oscar-level actor, but I can't think of a film where his performance was part of the problem. As for this film, I know it's a favorite of so many, but so much about it just doesn't really work for me. The kids hardly appear to be high schoolers and the whole thing with Diane's father (John Mahoney) is unnecessary. Oh well, I still like that Peter Gabriel song.

| Sense and Sensibility (1995) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: Not a bad film. Not a great film. As much as I love Alan Rickman, he just seemed all wrong for this film.
| The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: An absolutely fantastic film from Martin Scorsese and perhaps the only film Willem Dafoe doesn't creep the shit out of me. You can actually watch this one in high-definition on Netflix Instant Play right now… Get on it! Perhaps Universal (or Criterion) will give it a proper Blu-ray treatment soon.

| Watchmen (Director's Cut) (2009) |
QUICK THOUGHTS: This is another title I will be reviewing this Tuesday and I will admit the director's cut adds a little more to the story, but the film itself doesn't get any better. Oh well, here's a snippet of new footage from the film which now shows the death of Hollis Mason (Stephen McHattie).
