What are Your Guilty Pleasure Movies, but Don't Like to Admit It?

Time to open up a bit...

I thought the response to my "Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen? " post was excellent, and on top of everything so many of you said, several new questions came as a result. One of them, offered by 'Steve Mott', asks the question in the headline: Do you have guilty pleasures you don't like to admit to?

Steve lists his guilty pleasure as 10 Things I Hate About You, a film I personally love and was just discussing recently with a friend when the topic of "Where the hell did Julia Stiles go?" came up. To that effect I also love Save the Last Dance and to answer the Stiles question before someone gets smart in the comments, yes, she has the Bourne films and wrote and directed a film starring Zooey Deschanel and has also been doing plenty of work on stage. Moving along…

Other personal guilty pleasures of mine include Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Days of Thunder, The Perfect Storm, The Program, Shakespeare in Love, You've Got Mail, Lady in the Water, xXx, Graffiti Bridge, The Holiday, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, A Knight's Tale, Maverick, National Treasure, Blow, Cruel Intentions, Devil's Advocate, Enemy of the State and Titanic.

Now, of that list, films I would say I absolutely love would be Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Days of Thunder, The Perfect Storm, You've Got Mail, Lady in the Water, A Knight's Tale, Devil's Advocate and Titanic.

I know it's not cool to admit to loving Titanic (especially if you are a guy) and what about that Celine Dion song? Okay, I'll give you the Celine Dion song, but as far as everything else in Titanic I simply love it. However, to say you like Robin Hood is crazy because what about Kevin Costner's accent? And what? I like Lady in the Water? But M. Night Shyamalan is an *insult*, *insult*, *insult* and a raging *insult*! Yup, love these movie and I can watch any of them whenever and never be bored.

So what do you have to offer? What are your guilty pleasures? Can you admit the ones you won't even tell your friends you love? After all, you're anonymous on the web, it's time to let a little of yourself be known to a mass audience that doesn't even know who you are.

Perhaps it's only appropriate while you're putting together your list you listen to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" REEEEEEMIX!!! Hit play and let your heart go on, and on, and on, and on, and on!

Or maybe Sam Jackson's audition for Titanic is more to your liking:

I don't think anyone needs to feel guilty about loving "Titanic."

I will admit that I have read all four Twilight books and watch the movies. However, I'm not sure why I keep doing it, because the more I think about it, the more its Mormon views of sexuality creep me out. It advocates rushing into marriage to have sex instead of doing it out of wedlock, and it also gives domestic abuse a pass (even if it doesn't mean to). But I like it in the way that I liked "Star Wars Ep II." Something about utterly ridiculous love stories told in SUCH earnest really tickles me pink. But it happens very rarely; there are many utterly ridiculous love stories, and many that are told in earnest, but few that do both to such an extent as to match Twilight and Star War II.

I also like the Scary Movies. And Hostel (I actually want to watch Part II). And Saw (I've seen through 4).

Much like what I said on the "Do You Ever Lie" thread, I try not to lie about what movies I've seen and such. I'll definitely speak my mind if I like a movie people hated, or vice versa.

But…here are some "guilty pleasures" that just popped into my mind. Although I have no shame in admitting that I like them, of course!

"Chick Flicks"- The Wedding Date, The Notebook, Made of Honor, The Proposal, Sex and the City
Stupid Action Movies- The Mummy series, GI Joe, Rocky III, the overindulgent 10 minute montage in Rocky IV, Rambo, All of The Fast and the Furious films (Even and ESPECIALLY including Tokyo Drift), Babylon AD, XXX, Fantastic Four 2, The Marine. Batman & Robin (albeit ironically)
Odds & Ends: The Da Vinci Code, The Terminal, and of course, my 2nd favorite comedy of 2008, Twilight.

I admit to everything at this point, but for the longest time my biggest guilty pleasure movie was "Center Stage". Oh, and "Bring it On". Then, I discovered most of my friends loved those movies too and never admitted it, so we decided to come out together. Now we have marathons of movies we simply adore but were reluctant to admit, and it's really fun.

Oh, this is totally the best article you've ever posted, Brad.
I, too, love Titanic and have owned every single version of this movie that's ever been released, and plan to keep doing so. It's just utterly fantastic.
The one film I truly also love, but can't dare say it, is Brokeback Mountain. It is a FANTASTIC film, but as a guy, you can't say that.
Some other guilty pleasures of mine would be Twilight (don't get me wrong, I know that True Blood is better, there is no question of that, and I'm certainly not a "Twi-hard"), Lady in the Water, oh, and The Notebook. I love The Notebook!

@Garrett: There's nothing wrong with liking Shakespeare in Love. The films I listed are simply based on what I believe public perception to be and it always seemed to me that after Shakespeare in Love won the Best Picture Oscar it was looked down upon. I could be wrong, but I also think, as a guy, people will say it it's a "chick flick".

I fell aleep one night on the couch watching HBO …. I drifted from sleep to awake to watch about the last 70% of a movie staring Charlize Therron and Keanu Reeves. I guess it was because I was down on my luck at the time and half asleep but this film totally blew me away emotionally. I didn't even know what it was called untill some time later. It was Sweet November. It's been with me since, and most people I know have never even heard of it.

I was once working on a music video set and the 'director' asked me if the Constantine shirt I was wearing was from the movie. Of course it was, got it as a freebie when I bought the disc. He then mocked me. So I asked and it turned out he hadn't actually seen the movie but he insisted that Keanu Reeves is a stiff actor. I told him he should watch the movie since Lawrence directed music videos before film and the script strong.
I don't considered Constantine or Days of Thunder or A Knight's Tale or any other movie a guilty pleasure. If I enjoy watching it that's all I care about, especially if the detractors have never actually seen it.
As far as M Night goes, I haven't seen Lady in the Water but I had a lot of fun watching The Happening.

Hmmm, I'd say about any disaster film made in the last 20 years, with an especially soft spot for Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow (quite excited about 2012, maybe Roland Emmerich is my guilty pleasure). Apart from that, the usuals, 10 Things I hate about you, Starship Troopers, The Fifth Element (the more I watch it the less it makes sense).

This whole 'guilty pleasure' is very complicated.
Why should Titanic be a 'guilty pleasure'? Because people with bad taste dislike it? =P
Seriously, it's the most popular movie of all time (and not just because of teen girls like some like to argue), so liking it is a 'guilty pleasure' as much as liking Gone With the Wind or Sound of Music or The Godfather!

I mean, the movie must have be really liked to make 2 billion dollars ten years ago, right?

I wouldn't even consider liking Transformers (or any Michael Bay movie for that mather) a guilty pleasure. Sure, they all suck. But they're extremely popular, so it's not really uncommon to like them!

I dare to say that guilty pleasures are those obscure bad movies that no one saw, no care for them, only you. Like… Showgirls or Glitter!

As far as I can tell right now, my only guilty pleasure would be Spice World. I have no idea why, but I think it's a funny movie. =/

@Leandro Dubost: I would tend to agree with you on Titanic, but I tried to approach it with a wealth of ideas for people to figure out what their guilty pleasures were and I would say, depending on the environment, Titanic is definitely a film many men would not feel comfortable admitting to liking.

I also think Transformers is a film people wouldn't jump up and say, "I LOVED IT!" depending on the company.

I wouldn't say the amount of money a film made has anything to do with it. That just means people paid to see it, it's afterward when they freely admit to liking it amongst their friends.

At least, that's the approach I took when putting the article together if that makes any sense.

First of all, "Maverick" is not a guilty pleasure – it's a fun freaking movie.

Guilty Pleasures I (attempt to) Defend/Will Admit to Liking:

Southland Tales
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
It's All About Love
Prince of Darkness
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Love Actually/Music and Lyrics/The Proposal

Guilty Pleasures I'm Genuinely Ashamed Of:

Van Helsing
The Wicker Man (2006)
The Hollow (Kyle Newman's pre-Fanboys made-for-TV movie)
King Arthur (2004)
Revolver (the Guy Ritchie movie)

I'm sure there's a ton more. Those are just top-of-the-head.

For me it's all of the nostalgic classic Disney Movies. They're good films no doubt, but just the fact that I'm now a 26 year old man, I gotta keep it under raps. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a particular example. Not afraid to admit my love for The Jungle Book though…much…

I don't think mine are really embarrassing in any way, but here they are:
Mr Brooks – i get sucked in everytime it comes on the tv
Akira – I know it's weird but I can't help it
The Crow – probably the movie I've seen the most in my life. Can't get enough and listen to the soundtrack all the time.
Constantine – can't watch it enough
Equilibrium – great show that no one knows about…

i guess if you're talking kids shows – i have a few… I suppose the worst is Mulan. There, I said it. Also Finding Nemo, Sinbad, Treasure Planet, Madagascar, The Emperor's New Groove, The Iron Giant, Peter Pan (2003), The Road to El Dorado, and Ratatouille. So I don't just put them on for the kids, ok?

I think the post about Disney movies has really struck at the heart of this topic – a lot of people are listing movies I would never consider "guilty pleasures" – but to still like a corny/cheap movie that you first saw as a kid…yeah, that's right on the button.

I have a number of those old Disney films that I've been seeking out again (I don't mean the undisputed classics, but also-rans like 'The World's Greatest Athlete', 'Snowball Express' etc – all still fun movies!!)

I can't think of a single movie that I'd be ashamed to admit that I like… Movies like "Titanic", "Mean Girls", "Shakespeare in Love" and "Bring it On" aren't guilty pleasures at all to me! They're all great filmmaking, in my opinion. And I happen to know a lot of people who like it, too.

Of course, there are only a few people who laugh as hard as I do with "White Chicks"… But fuck it, it was funny as hell and I'll watch it everytime it's on the TV. And I loved the bit at the Oscars when Chris Rock went to the theaters and asked, "What's the best movie of the year?" and everybody was saying "White Chicks"!

"Showgirls" and "Starship Troopers" were two movies that I hated when I saw it, but now I think they're great – especially "Showgirls", a masterpiece of over-the-top performances and brilliant one liners.

Glad to see I'm not alone on Titanic. People seem to look at me like I have ten heads whenever I say that it deserved the Oscars it won 12 years ago. The only movie from that year that I could see having possibly beaten it would be LA Confidential. Still, I think Titanic was a superior film. I watched it a few months ago and realized that it is still quite an achievement, even if some of the dialogue makes me cringe from being so cheesy. But whatever, I think it's possibly the best romance movie in recent years. People give me shit for it whenever it's brought up. Oh well!

I loved Titanic as well as the Celine Dion song, and wait a sec, if I am not mistaken it won an Oscar, right ?
And +1 for 10 things I hate about you. That movie had some of the wittiest dialogues ever heard in a teen movie. Other guilty pleasures include:
1) The American Pie series(except the 4th and 6th one, Band Camp and Beta House), 2) Tthe 1995 movie Bushwhacked(remember I was 10 at that time ;-) )
3) La guerre des tuques(The Dog that stopped the war) – I must have been 6 when I saw this one, and man I simply loved it. I have been trying to get my hands on the DVD of this movie, but in India, they are real hard to get.
4) Mortal Kombat – okay this one is pretty stupid.
5) Godzilla – I was in awe of that behemoth
6) The Mask – that green baldie was hilarious
The list is pretty long, but I have run out of time for now. So long.

Ok so I am assuming that by calling a movie a guilty pleasure you it does not mean that the movie is badly made or anything – because no one would call Titanic badly made… i absolutely love that movie and watch it everytime its on the tele. similarly it might be considered a bit odd for a guy to love "the Devil Wears Prada" as much as i do . i watch it almost once a month own it on DVD and i can recite the dialogues at any point in the movie… its brilliant meryl anne and emily are brilliant and so i stanely tucci . @Brad Brevet

I think Titanic made a lot of money because people REALLY liked. Back then we didn't had inflated IMAX and 3D screens – and let's not even count the fact the tickets were way cheaper.

And it was not the kinda of movie that made $150 million opening weekend on its way to $600 mi. It opened with what, $28 mi or something? It probably was considered a flop at first! (I would've worried if I were the president of Paramount =P )

In this specific case, I think Titanic is a prime example of a movie that made A LOT of bucks and it made it because people loved it. It happened to have a few who hated it exactly because it made a lot money, got a lot of media attention (because if made a lot of money!) and won a lot of Oscars. Don't ask me to explain why, but some people hated the popularity Titanic achieved…

I'm just saying that because I don't consider Titanic guilty please (I understand your point of view, I'm just elaborating mine a little more over here) because it's a great movie, a classic already why not? 12 years later and people still talk about it!

Good luck with that, Slumdog Millionaire. =P

There are two genres that fit the catagory "guilty" for alot of people. Guilty means these are films I will sit at home and watch by myself because none of my friends would want to watch these films with me. I'm a 38 and a male. I'm not going to have the X-Box/ PS3 guys over to watch movies like say … Enchanted, Mary Poppins, Hairspray, Pet's Dragon, Mamma Mia etc … Notice how these movies are mostly musicals, chick flicks, or what would traditionaly be known as "kids" movies. So … when a guy goes out with his girl or takes his kids to see these kinds of films, and likes them….. but is afreaid to admit it …. It only speaks to the magic of the movies, to transform even the most stereotypical person back to their childhood. For whatever reason, people tend to view the films that can do to them with guilt. It's all about stereotypes and what you feel is outside of your normal demographic. Its all silly.

Ohhh… Mortal Kombat (still the best video game movie ever), Starship Troopers, Waterworld, Van Helsing, Ace Venture 2: When Nature Calls, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist and all four of The Fast & the Furious movies.

I love Titanic. Saw it 7 times in a theater. Heck it won the Oscar for Best Picture and deserved it. Its everything a great movie should be. I guess my guilty pleasure (and I'll never apologize) would be the entire disaster genre. I just love disaster movies. Here's my list of my top ten disaster films plus the best radio show/podcast on the genre that I ever have done.

I can honestly say that I don't have any guilty pleasures. While I'm sure many people will call BS on that statement, this is my explanation: I don't have any movies that I think I should be guilty for liking. Plain and simple. Just because some people think that a couple of movies I like are beyond stupid doesn't mean that I'm required to dislike them and then admit that I should be ashamed for liking them. If I like a movie, then I like it. If you don't like it, then good for you. I don't feel guilty or ashamed that I own all of the Pokémon movies on DVD and anticipating the next movie. Nor do I blush and lower my voice when I admit that I'm going to rush out to see Saw VI on opening day. I think I'm allowed to enjoy the so called "respectable" and "good taste" movies just as much as I'm allowed to enjoy the "guilty" movies.

What I find interesting is that I'm reading this article right after reading the Fight Club article. After Fight Club just came out, did people call that their "guilty pleasure" because it was too horrendous for any "intelligent" person to enjoy? I doubt it. Especially since people now days get a look of "are you really that much of an idiot?" when they admit that they either haven't seen Fight Club or (God forbid) they don't like it. Funny how in just a couple years a movie can flip from being a piece of crap into a classic. How many people do you think first considered the horrible flop of a movie called Citizen Kane their guilty pleasure? Isn't it now considered to be one of the two best movies ever made?

To me, there shouldn't be any "guilty pleasures". Just because five people don't like a movie doesn't mean that the sixth has to be ashamed to like it. If that theory were to go into full effect, then people would completely hate any movie that wasn't given four stars by Ebert or any of the other top critics, robbing us of our own personal movie tastes.

If people want to rumage through my collection and pick out a few movies that they think I should be guiltiy about liking, then I bet I could do the same to them. I like what I like and I don't think I should be embarrassed to do so.

Step Up, 300, Love Actually, (as a girl I guess I don't have to feel guilty about liking Titanic), Twilight, National Treasure and VAN HELSING – love that film, have no idea why..

And I don't know if it could be called a guilty pleasure to like The Dark Knight, but I feel a little guilty of exactly how perversly much I like it. I also can't get enough of The Bourne Identity!

I would have to say 'The Princess Bride'. I remember watching this as a kid and re-watching as an adult and it's still brilliant.

Some people seem to be mentioning movies that I don't think you need to be ashamed of. I think 'Collateral' is amazing, but don't think I should be ashamed of it!

@ABLE: I think you meant Stephen Rea (not Fry) and you can't be talking about Justin Chambers (from Grey's Anatomy)?? Is it because you think he's a horrible actor? He's dreamy.. I haven't seen the movie… now I want to. Tim Roth is great actor; I'm surpised-but I've never heard of this movie.

Guilty pleasure movies? I have recently re-discovered my love of the Rocky franchise
even though my husband likes to mock them (and me) throughout. There's just
something about Rocky always taking one more punch, going one more round, etc…

Other movies:

Armageddon
Twister
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Day After Tomorrow
Independence Day
Say Anything
Titanic
Brokeback Mountain
The Lonley Hearts Club
The Breakfast Club
Mulan
Hercules (the Disney movie)
Die Hard (1 and 4)
Transformers (both)
Terminator (1, 2 and 4)
Batman
Batman Begins
Dark Knight
American Psycho
Little Women
Vampire movies
any 80's brat pack movie
