We've Got to Give 'Hancock 2' a Shot… Right?

Core trio set to return...

Word has it that not only will we see Will Smith back in the title role of Hancock 2, but Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman are also set to return for the sequel to the critically panned 2008 box-office success Hancock.

There remain scant plot details with Variety saying Smith and Theron will once again play immortal gods, who lose their powers when in each other's presence. The two must pair up to deal with a third entity. The actioner is expected to explore the 3,000-year-old world they're from, which was only hinted at in the first film.

Recently Berg told Sci-Fi Wire the film may incorporate another god and added more telling MTV, "We're looking at exploring [Smith and Theron's] relationship prior to when we first met them and seeing a bit of what happened as a prequel. I think we danced around the concept of an origins and we settled on something that is very substantive. That will part of the sequel."

As someone that did not enjoy the original all that much, I still find myself interested if only for my interest in Peter Berg as a director and a certain level of expectation when it comes to Smith, Theron and Bateman. I mean, how can you count out a film with that trio before you've seen it? I know I can't.

Doubt it. The last movie was not very good, even Peter Berg complained the the movie lacked quality due to over involvement from producers. He also stated that when CGI action sequences are introduced, the director looses creative control to the animators. All of this coupled with the rarity of quality sequels in the film industry creates a recipe for disaster. I've slowly been loosing my respect with Will Smith in recent years, and Charlize Theron rarely has a decent role anymore. I will most likely not see this movie, unless some dazzling info or trailer comes along and changes it. Hancock was a project that had been floating around Hollywood since the early 90s. I will agree with you that Berg has skills as a director, but I don't think he will have enough control over this one at all.

The only reason I might not count it out right away is because I thought the first maybe…quarter or maybe even half of the movie was decent to good, then it just went down hill from there. Hopfully the 2nd will atleast be tollerable if not good.
