Naomi Watts Joins King Lear: Anthony Hopkins is to play King Lear in a new film version of the Shakespeare tragedy for director Joshua Michael Stern. The film will feature Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and Keira Knightley as Lear’s three daughters, with more big names to be revealed soon, according to the director, Joshua Michael Stern. Amy Ryan Goes from Oscar to “Office”: “The Wire” star Amy Ryan will get a chance to flex her comedic muscles a bit more next season as she joins “The Office” for multiple episodes. Ryan is set to appear in at least five segs in the fall, reprising her role as human resources rep Holly Flax. Ryan’s character first showed up in “The Office’s” season finale as a potential love interest for Michael Scott (Steve Carell). [Variety]

Matthew Fox Goes All Billy Smoke: Matthew Fox (”Lost” and Speed Racer) is in negotiations to star in Warner Bros.’ Billy Smoke, based on the Oni Press comic about a hit man seeking redemption. Story centers on an elite hit man who’s nearly killed during a botched job and realizes that his only way to find redemption is to rid the world of all assassins. [Variety]

Four More Whip It!: Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell are mixing it up with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore in Barrymore’s directorial debut, the roller derby comedy Whip it!. Harden plays an overbearing ex-beauty queen who would rather see her daughter, Bliss (Page), in pageants than skates. Wiig (”Saturday Night Live”) plays Bliss’ rowdy mentor, Malice in Wonderland. Lewis is Dinah Might, the star of Austin’s top team. Bell plays a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly. [THR]
