Watch Now as Bullock Delivers the Razzle Dazzle at the Razzies

She's definitely got spirit

I hate the Razzies, truly I do. It's not often I talk about something related to the film world in such harsh terms, but as the years go by and you begin to grow up and look at things a little closer, you begin to realize just how stupid they are. Last year I made a similar statement to which Razzies founder John Wilson found it necessary to contest causing me to write my own reply. I mention all of this because I truly felt I would never cover the Razzies again, and I guess, for the most part, I'm not necessarily covering them with this article as much as I am taking pleasure in Sandra Bullock's acceptance speech at the Razzies in which she shows great character while at the same time pointing out the stupidity of it all.

Bullock, the current front-runner to win this year's Oscar for Best Actress, was "awarded" the Golden Raspberry Award for her performance in All About Steve as well as shared an award with her Steve co-star Bradley Cooper for Worst Screen Couple.

When the likelihood of her winning became known Bullock told Entertainment Weekly, "Oh my God, how fantastic is that? I'm showing up if I win." Well, despite attending a charity event to benefit the Motion Picture Television Fund Foundation on Saturday night she lived up to that promise and made an appearance.

Reminding the audience of her promise, Bullock began her acceptance saying, "I didn't realize that in Hollywood all you have to do is say that you'll show up and then you'll [win the award]. If I had known that I would have said I was appearing at the Oscars a long time ago." It was after this she began delving into the logic problems with the entire proceedings.

Bullock, accompanied by a crate of All About Steve DVDs for the audience, said, "Something tells me you all didn't really watch the film, because I wouldn't be here if you really watched it and understood what I was trying to say."

Gold Derby gives us the following exchange, which is edited out of the video below in which Bullock says, "I brought the shooting script [and] I'm willing to go through page by page, read the line the way I did it in the film and, if anyone wants to give me a line read of how I could've done it better… We can do this till about 4 o'clock in the morning. Or you guys can just watch the movie and rethink your decision, and I'll show up next year and we can go out for a drink afterward." According to the Gold Derby report this was when the audience cheered and applauded. I have to wonder if they understood what she was saying or merely cheering at the idea of getting a drink. My assumption is the latter.

Bullock continued by addressing the award for worst screen couple saying, "Again, if you had seen the film, seen it with your eyes, it's pretty much a film about a woman stalking a man. That doesn't really set up the premise for a loving couple. So giving us the worst couple award is kind of a duh." Of course, the award, I would assume, is for the least believable on-screen couple, but as Sandra points out, they aren't exactly splitting atoms when it comes to awarding the Razzie "winners".

  1. She's like the actress with the biggest heart. Her joke was funny, straight to the point, she admit her defeat. But, all she said was true, she probably feel so related to the story when it was just on script. Personally, yes, all about steve was bad movie, but, her appearance on that movie is the biggest plus factor for that movie. Love you sandra, may Oscar granted you with the biggest price, Best Actress in a leading role.

    Regards from Indonesia

  2. She did a great job at defending a movie by explaining it was just a popcorn comedy and that no one could have done it any better. And she also implicitly mocked how pathetic an awards show the Razzies really are. Man I hope she wins the Oscars; I haven't liked her this much since the George Lopez Show days (a show which she helped create).

  3. She is is easily one of the actresses I cannot stand at all (like Reese Witherspoon or Jenifer Aniston) but i admit this was funny. At least she has a sense of humor. I only Saw her in the Proposal last year but it was easily the worst film i watched in 2009. What is strange is that I chuckled more at this 3 minute video clip than I did in the whole of the Proposal. I cant imagine how much more terrible All ABout Steve could have been if that is the film that wins "Worst of the Year" awards.

  4. This awards show is STUPID! How did Megan Fox lose the Razzie? Brad, never post articles about this awards show EVER AGAIN! God, I can't stand it right now!

  5. Look, I've got no problem with people having a good time, but I'm the cranky old guy on the porch about this. She could very well take home the Oscar, the most prestigious award the movie industry has to give, and the night before, she goes to the bad movie awards and flaunts her awards for All About Steve. I really hope the Oscar goes to any of the other four ladies contending, because Bullock does not deserve it. She helps make stupid movies like Steve and Proposal that do no help to the lack of quality coming out of Hollywood these days. Even Blind Side wasn't a great movie (I'd give it a C). Let's hope the Academy doesn't reward this kind of stuff.

  6. Not a fan of Sandra Bullock's movie choices (I actually think she would have a lot of promise if she just picked better roles.) but she does seem like a nice modest person with a great sense of humor.

  7. Good sport. atleast she had fun with it.

  8. lol, I read the other articles. But come on Brad. I love your site, but I mean, why criticize the razzies for putting Uwe as a suggestion for the worst director. Afterall, I just read you already have around 45 best pictures contenders for next Oscar race. And I'm prety sure Cristopher Nolan's Inception is on that 45 list. Like you said with Disaster Movie, sometimes you don't need to see a movie to know it will be bad or to know it promises to be good. But here we talk about the raziess, the worst of the worst. Yes, they're not very serious because they more like MTV camp and they have popular movies as a way to draw attention. But the thing is they're meant to be stupid, that's nothing new. And I read your review of All about Steve and I believe it will definetely be on your worst of the worst list of 2009, wich will be fun to know about. So I really think you should do your bootom 10 of 2009, it will be fun to know.

  9. oh and by the way, I did read your list of dissapointing films, where I was surprised to watch District 9 and Watchmen there. Buy anyway I was also surprised to watch Public Enemies on the Top 25 when that was definetely one of the mot dissaponting for me. I'm talking worst of the worst list..
