Warner Bros. is Banking Hard on 'Watchmen'

Now some video game news hits the scene

Warner Bros. seems to believe their film adaptation Watchmen based on the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons is going to reach outside of the core audience already aware and frothing at the mouth for the film adaptation just as they have been for years.

Warner already has plans for a DVD triple-dip as has already been fully detailed almost a year before the film even hits theaters let alone acquired a DVD release date, and now there are talks of video game downloads timed around the film's theatrical release as well as the DVD release.

Variety's Ben Fritz wrote today about two downloadable games that will be offered as tie-ins to the film. The download option is a result of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment hoping to create a shorter, but higher quality game than traditionally accompanies a film's release. Most often games based on films are made within a one year span and traditionally suck due to quick turnaround time. They may sell well due to the name recognition, but, as WBIE senior VP of production and development Samantha Ryan says, "We don't want a low-quality console game that will get lost at retail. downloadable game allows us to deliver the experience that fans expect."

The download will first arrive upon the theatrical release next March and the second around the DVD launch. If successful, the studio could also produce more installments following the initial two. It may also use the downloadable videogame tie-in model for future pics.

Featured in the game will be the characters Rorschach and Nite Owl. The games are expected to earn a mature (M) rating and will be available for download on PCs, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The one thing to wonder here is whether or not audiences not familiar with the source material will be interested in this film and its subsequent games and multiple DVD releases. Warner seems to be already moving forward with guns a-blazin', but should audiences not familiar with the Hugo Award winning graphic novel not turn out to theaters, or if the film turns out to be critically panned, what happens then?

Based on the fact that "Watchmen" is highly praised, it still isn't Batman or Superman when it comes to comic book name recognizition. I personally hope it lives up to expectations and makes a ton of money, but I am speaking from an interested fan's perspective, there is a lot more needed than just built-in fans to make a blockbuster, but considering the influence said fans have on the Internet that could be enough in the case of Watchmen.

Never underestimate the power of a little something I like to call "word of mouth" haha.

I think I've told all my friends and their cousins about this movie, at least twice. So I'm doing more than my share for the Warner Bros..... I just don't know how I feel about these games. Oh well, we'll see later on!
