Warm Up Your DVD Players, ‘Point Break 2′ is On the Way

Actually, don't warm up your DVD players...

The most ridiculous headline I have read in some time popped up on Ain’t It Cool News today. Get a load of this:

Gargantuanly Important News From Cannes: There’s A POINT BREAK Sequel On The Way!!

Where do you start with such a stupid statement - or is it sarcasm? Unfortunately, I think the double-exclamation mark seals it as serious. Don’t you just love the exclamation-mark? DON’TCHA!?!?!

Anyway, let’s get to the miniscule and damn near infuriating news from Cannes via The Hollywood Reporter. Yes, a sequel to the 1991 film Point Break. The film will be directed by Jan de Bont (Speed, Twister, Tomb Raider) based on a script by original Point Break scripter W. Peter Iliff. Iliff was actually rumored only last October to be writing and directing the sequel himself. At that time the plot was said to be:

Point Break 2 picks up from where the original film left off more than 15 years ago. The story will revolve around an ex-professional surfer who enlists in the US Navy and is recruited to track down a criminal gang based in Southeast Asia. The audience will also discover the fate of Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the surfers’ charismatic leader who was swallowed by a giant killer wave in the final scene of Point Break. Did he really die?

While that plot seems to have been abandoned the earlier reported news from ComingSoon.net seems to prove true as the film will be shooting in Singapore and Southeast Asia. While The Hollywood Reporter did not report on a plot or the return of any of the previous stars, which include Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Lori Petty, IESB brings us this plot:

When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he’s recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like “The Ex-Presidents,” a bank robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.

Unfortunately, as I think about it, it doesn’t really matter what the plot is. If this is an actual sequel to Point Break then it will include Keanu Reeves and maybe Lori Petty, but Swayze is dead (yup, the wave killed him folks). If the film doesn’t include Reeves or Petty, or if it does include Swayze, it’s crap. No one was asking for this and despite what AICN says, it isn’t “Important” news. It’s ridiculous news. Call the damn thing something else, not Point Break: Indo.

Ha, yeah, you will notice how I deftly avoid reporting that one. :)
