Vin Diesel Looks Tough in Exclusive 'Babylon A.D.' Image

Vin and director hash it out on set of new sci-fi actioner

For some reason I have seen a lot of negativity in the direction of Vin Diesel lately as the August 29 release of Babylon A.D. inches closer. I am not sure where any negative sentiment came from considering Diesel has never proposed to be anything more than an action guy. Sure, he made The Pacifier, but The Rock made The Game Plan and no one seems to speak too negative about him. Diesel has a lot of personality, he just rarely gets a chance to show it. If you need proof give Find Me Guilty a chance, it's not an Oscar worthy film, but it does show there is more than just an action guy inside of Diesel.

I say all of this only because I think fans should give Babylon A.D. a chance as Vin plays a mercenary hired to deliver a package from the ravages of post-apocalyptic Eastern Europe to a destination in the teeming megalopolis of New York City. The "package" is a mysterious young woman with a secret. I don't know what you think, but the last shot in the trailer prior to the title screen is pretty killer.

The image above featuring Vin and director Mathieu Kassovitz is exclusive to RopeofSilicon and you can check out a larger version by clicking here or on the thumbnail at the bottom of the article. But first, also check out the trailer below and see the shot I am talking about if you haven't already done so.

Yup, the trailer sure looks good enough to give this film a shot.

This is one Im very much looking forward to. Reminds me of a Children of Men meets Blade Runner type feel .

I agree, I personally really like Vin Diesel. Even the crappy movies hes in (A Man Apart, XXX, Knockaround Guys, etc) are elevated a bit by his personality and charisma. I think I really started to like him as an actor with Chronicles of Riddick, a film I know many people do not like, but I found it refreshing to see an actor have such a passion for a film and for a character as he did with that film, especially the director's cut.

He was also good in his brief part in Saving Private Ryan and one of the better performances in Boiler Room. I'll check it out cause I can, and don't hate the guy.

You guys are failing to mention probably his best performance: Pitch Black (a performance which is not equaled by Chronicles of Riddick, even though he's playing the same character).

I also thought of Children of Men when hearing about this movie even before the trailer, but with the trailer it seems like it is only going to be a rip off of movies like that for a more mainstream audience (which obviously failed because this movie has labor day weekend, one of the worst weekends for movies of the year).

I'm hoping I'm wrong and that Kassovitz brings the material to a new level, but I've never really been fond of his work as a director, so I'm not sure what to expect. I'm almost a Vin Diesel apologist, but even I could turn on him if he's as bad in the movie as he looks in the trailer (that voice over at the beginning sounds EXACTLY like the Riddick voice-overs…..and what he's saying even sounds like Riddick, if i hadn't already known what i was watching I'd have thought it was Riddick 3 for sure).

I truly dont think he was better in Pitch Black than in Riddick… he was so one dimensional in PB, with the exception of the every end, when he says "Not for me…". Dont get me wrong, I love Pitch Black, but I think his performance in Riddick was a stronger one in general.

Pitch Black was a far better movie, as a whole. His performance was part of an ensemble. The movie worked well because of that and because of the stripped down set.

Chronicles was Vin's movie with a half-assed cast and way too many special effects. His performance may have been better but the awful, overblown special effects made it a horrible addition to a "Riddick trilogy". I hate that phrase. Hell, I hate Crying Riddick. Ug.

Anyway – thanks for the article and the picture. I haven't heard one nice thing about this movie from anyone, anywhere, and it was frustrating. I wish we here in the US were getting the European cut, but we'll see it at some point, I suppose. I really want this to go well for him.

He's so good in movies with a strong cast. I wish he'd step down from having to be the star and do more of those. People need to remember that the man can act, and he needs to show it more often.
