Verbinski Officially Declines 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4'

A decision that only makes sense

Director Gore Verbinski has officially stated he is not interested in directing Pirates of the Caribbean 4 for Walt Disney, all while Johnny Depp has agreed to return as Captain Jack Sparrow and the studio was hoping to begin production in 2010. Verbinski spent the better part of the last six years directing the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and it only makes sense he wouldn't want to return for another installment in a decision I would assume Peter Jackson dealt with before handing over the directorial duties on the two upcoming Hobbit films to Guillermo del Toro.

Verbinski certainly has plenty on his plate to deal with in the meantime, including the much talked about videogame adaptation Bioshock for Universal Pictures and the CG-animated film Rango with Paramount that coincidentally includes Johnny Depp as the lead voice.

As for storylines, Bioshock is an adaptation of the Take-Two videogame, which takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he’d thought. John Logan (Sweeney Todd) wrote the script and also penned the script for Rango.

Rango already has a release date set for March 18, 2011 and in it Depp will voice the title character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.

Additional films set up at Verbinski's production house, Blind Wink, include a new adaptation of the Hasbro board game "Clue" and a drama penned by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) based on a Wall Street Journal article about the online fantasy role-playing world and its debilitating impact on the real lives of players. There is no word on whether or not Verbinski is looking to direct either of those features.

It should be pointed out Verbinski was never attached to direct Pirates 4 and I assume this announcement was made simply to clear up any confusion and make sure Disney began a search for a director.

It's a shame he's not coming back, but hey if Tim Burton is available, hire him!

Bad move… POC 4 would've earned minimum $300 million worldwide … now he's stuck with a game adaptation with the pressure of the game-movie curse… and he runs the risk of Bioshock grossing less than High School Musical but costing as much as 'Watchmen'

Full marks to him though, for having the balls to take this decision

This is good news. Now maybe they can also get new writers that will bring fresher, edgier, and more streamlined ideas to the 4th installment, that will steer it more towards the fun escapism of Curse of the Black Pearl. Imho, the franchise went off track with Dead Man's Chest, and when completely way out of control with At World's End. Disney does share blame in the debacle in quality for they rushed the sequels into production.

Personally, I think they should just ditch the "Pirates of the Caribbean" title and go something along the lines of "The Adventures of Jack Sparrow" or "Jack Sparrow and the Fountain of Youth" etc..

^^ It doesn't matter who shared the 'blame in the debacle of quality' … POC has become a soil franchise/cultural phenomenon. J depp and Stunning Visual Effects = awesome popcorn fun. Those guys aren't looking to make an Oscar worthy 'No country for old men' type of a flick … if the movie is entertaining as hell, that's about all that matters.

I have realy enjoyed the trilogy so far and couldnt say i have a favourate out of the 3 however, if the film was to be made with a different director i would kind of look at it differently. im not saying i dont want another one because i realy do and i would think having tim burton getting stuck into this 17th century swash-buckling pirate adventure would only improve it. Alots been said on who and who wont be coming back, orlando and keira probobly wont be making the 4th installment a spin-off (in my opinion). depp and rush seem certain about coming back….so thats the protaganists set. it would just be amatter of rounding everyone else back up.

Hold the thought (pirates of the caribbean) before curse of the black pearle….alot of things had happened before potc 1. and i would love to see a story from the beggining
