'Up In the Air' Gets Bumped to December Release

We're going to have to wait a little longer

I just received word from Paramount that they are moving Jason Reitman's Up in the Air from its limited November 13th release to December. The release schedule now goes as follows:

  • December 4, 2009 limited
  • December 11, 2009 expansion
  • December 25, 2009 wide

Up In the Air was a huge festival favorite at Telluride and Toronto and has since become a top contender for the Best Picture Oscar. Director Jason Reitman and stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick also loom large in the race as does the potential for a Best Adapted Screenplay for Reitman.

The film stars Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate hatchet man who loves his life on the road but is forced to fight for his job when his company downsizes its travel budget. He is required to spend more time at home just as he is on the cusp of a goal he's worked toward for years: reaching five million frequent flyer miles and just after he's met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.

The trailer is featured directly below and you can get more on the film, including our gallery of seven images right here.

Disappointing, but nothing to dwell on simply because there are so many good films coming out.

It just raises the question as to what else is being released around then. What's its likely competition, Brad?

Yes! It will get a wide release. Good thing on Christmas, too.

@Patricia: Sherlock Holmes is one example. The Lovely Bones is also released around the same time.

@m1: Tough competition? Or does it matter? "Up in the Air" will be going for Oscar nom's so that will generate some buzz and a more rolled out release.

So that's why it hasn't been rated yet!
