The first new film Universal plans to debut on the high-definition format will be Doomsday, which will release this summer day-and-date with its DVD counterpart. Other titles on deck for 2008 include American Gangster, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Miami Vice, End of Days, U-571 and Land of the Dead, among others.

The only other confirmed release dates will be the simultaneous release of “Heroes: Season One” and “Heroes: Season Two” on August 26.

Universal also confirms that its blockbuster summer 2008 tentpoles will also be available in time for the holidays. This means titles such as The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Mamma Mia! and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will all be available in high definition Blu-ray format by the end of the year.

Universal was one of the last HD DVD supporters to abandon the format and is throwing their hat fully in the Blu-ray ring. “We’re thrilled that our preliminary slate of Blu-ray offerings comprises such a brilliant collection of high-def centric fare,” said Mr. Kornblau. “As awareness for Blu-ray continues to grow, consumers will learn to rely on the superior quality picture, sound, interactivity and connectivity that only high-definition home entertainment delivers.”
