Universal Eyes Another Toy Adaptation with Tom Hanks On Board
The commercial has some snazzy rhyming action
I have never heard of the Mattel action figure "Major Matt Mason," but I guess that's because it originated 11 years before I was born, but apparently it is ripe for a feature film adaptation as Universal is set to bring the vintage action figure to life as a star vehicle for Tom Hanks with Graham Yost aboard to write the script.
The Variety story announcing the project says the toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.
The film will be produced through Hanks' production house Playtone and word is when Mattel execs Tim Kilpin and Barry Waldo came to Playtone for a meeting, they brought an arsenal of the Matt Mason figures and Hanks came armed with his own.
Graham Yost has spent most of his time recently scripting television series such as "Boomtown" as well as two episodes of the hit mini-series "Band of Brothers." His last work on a feature film screenplay was the Rod Lurie directed The Last Castle in 2001, but his most high-profile script has to be 1994's action hit Speed followed by the John Woo fizzler Broken Arrow in 1996.
As for Hanks, he will next be seen reprising his role as Robert Langdon in Angels and Demons on May 15.
