'Twilight' Sequels – 'New Moon' and 'Eclipse' – Get the Green

Edward and Bella aren't going anywhere

The Hollywood Reporter seems to know something no one else knew as they report the sequels to Twilight (11/21) are a go as Summit Entertainment has brought on scribe Melissa Rosenberg to pen scripts based on "New Moon" and "Eclipse," the second and third books in the franchise, respectively.

The story of Twilight centers on the relationship between an average teenage girl, Bella (Kristen Stewart), and a vampire, Edward (Robert Pattinson) and the troubles facing a human/vampire relationship such as blood drinking, cold skin and the lack of a sex life.

Director Catherine Hardwicke recently told MTV the number this first film had to hit in order for the sequel to get greenlit was something like $150 million, which seemed like a wildly unreasonable number for a film that only cost a rumored amount of $40-50 million to make. The buzz around the film is big due to its rabid fanbase, and due to such fragility there is no telling just what kind of numbers the flick will end up doing.

As for casting, Robert Pattinson recently told E! he is signed on to play Edward in three films and I will assume Kirsten Stewart, who plays Bella, has a similar deal as most likely does the rest of the cast. There is no mention of the fourth and final book, "Breaking
Dawn," getting a screenwriter, but I am sure they will play it by ear and try to run it as Warner Bros. has run the Harry Potter franchise, obviously on a much smaller scale of course.

I read somewhere else, I think it was MTV (I was following links, don't judge) that the two books had only been optioned, which makes a lot more sense.

Personally, I think that the buzz for this movie is waaaaaay overblown. Remember the huge buzz for Serenity that indicated it was going to be astronomically big? Then it only made $10M opening weekend and went on to fall just shy of recovering its $39M budget in total global ticket sales? Summit apparently doesn't, given that they're marketing pretty exclusively to the readers and fans of the book. As I've said in other places, based on just the trailer (which is all the marketing I've seen other than the window decals at Hot Topic, not even kidding), the movie is too dark for younger audience and too bland to appeal to any adults who haven't read the book.

Once upon a time, there were two other movies based on Firefly planned for production, based on the gigantic Internet buzz, because Serenity was going to do huge business. I expect the two Twilight sequels to be quietly forgotten when the movie fails to make any penetration outside its established fanbase and underperforms against strong competition from movies with more broad appeal.

I saw someone in a Twilight forum using some pretty twisted numbers to try and brag that Twilight was more successful than Harry Potter, and boasted that the total sales for all four Twilight books combined was about $7 million. So if only people who bought the book will see the movie, and the book costs twice as much as a movie ticket…

There weren't enough Browncoats to save Serenity, and there aren't enough teenage girls to save Twilight. As it turns out, you can stop the signal if no one else cares about it.

@aerinpegadrak: I have to disagree very strongly. Alot of what you said about Twilight was also said about the Harry Potter movies when they first started coming out. I am a fan of the books but I also think that it will do well in the box office. I work at a movie theatre and we are completely sold out of all our midnight showing and 3 of our 4 friday showing on both screens. And I havent heard of it being much different anywhere else. I think the movies will do good. Much better than Serenity. But we will see. Im not saying your wrong completely. The movie is hyped to the extreme. But I dont doubt its box office numbers will live up to the hype.

the soundtrack sold 165,000 copies its first week. Putting it on the #1 album (not just soundtrack but album) on the billboard charts. I dont know how this movie could fail.

Boo, I wrote a long reply and it apparently got lost. Stupid internets.

Harry Potter had marketing and lots of it, plus book sales that shattered previous records, which Twilight hasn't come near attaining. Summit has no marketing campaign for this movie, because they're so convinced that the fanbase is big enough to carry it. Star Wars has one of the largest and most loyal fanbases in the annals of history, and Lucasfilm still marketed the holy hell out of the prequels. It doesn't matter how many fans your franchise has, you still have to convince people who've never heard of you to plunk down for a ticket or you're dead in the water.

Plus, Disney has launched an aggressive counter-marketing campaign, directed at Twilight's strongest demographic. ("Fully awesome"? There clearly talking to teens here.) Disney's marketing machine is one of the most effective and experienced in the business, while Summit is just resting on its laurels and hoping that 14-year-old girls will do their job for them. What they have failed to realize is that the average Twilight fan really doesn't care if other people see the movie, as long as she gets to. The quality of your movie is irrelevant (Beverly Hills Chihuahua was a turd that topped $100M globally), box office receipts come down to marketing, and Summit's marketing department is failing hard.

Sure, 165,000 copies of the soundtrack sounds like an impressive number. So say ten times that number show up for opening weekend. That's 1.6 million viewers at $10 a pop, so you're looking at a $16M gross. That would have been a decent opening in October (Max Payne opened at #1 with $18M), but with Bond at $70M this weekend and Madagascar at $63M last weekend, it's simply not up to par with a holiday release.

So you have a movie with limited appeal from a newbie studio that hasn't done much marketing, opening against a movie from an entertainment giant that's an expert at driving ticket sales no matter what the subject, and facing several holdover films that are holding remarkably steady. It doesn't matter what specific names you plug into this little madlib, it's not going to end well for the newbie.

Whether we like it or not..this movie will be HUGE! Its already making itself known. As of yesterday afternoon –It just made #3 on fandango's all time most presale tickets beating "ALL" of the Harry Potter movies, "ALL" of The lord of the rings, "ALL" Pirates of the carribean…etc. –#2 Dark Knight, #1 Star Wars episode III. Its also the only one that made the list that is not a sequel. If that is not any indication to you I dont know what is..If you dont believe me..jst google it=)

OK so I read all the books and saw Twilight twice: midnight showing and again the next evening. The movie was fantastic and stayed true to the book 98% of the time. Of course not every single detail was in it since that is impossible for cinematography but yea, i do not doubt it's success since there already has been a major major turn out for it.
And if someone saw the movie and didnt like it, ask them: Have you read the book? and Was it different than what you pictured in your head? If they answer no to either question, tell them to shut the hell up and live in a Hobbit hole. =]

ive seen the movie twice and ive read all four books about 3-4 times each, what can i say, i love them. But i agree with lizzie, they should of put more of the book in it and made it longer. I also think that they really shouldnt of changed some of the things. I have to admit though, that the biology scene really dissipointed me, i thought he was a terrible edward but throughout the movie i started to love him. =] i cant wait for the 2ed one to come out!

To aerinpegadra:

Remind me again where exactly Bond and Madagascar were on their respective opening weekends compared to Twilight? Ahem. That’s right – Twilight outsparkled Madagascar and came in just behind Bond.

I am not 14, I am 37 and a huge fan of the books; I saw the movie last weekend. Interesting. My demographic is a huge supporter of Ms Meyer’s work (btw I DON’T have teenage daughters, either) , but I don’t think anyone thought of us. Cougars, as they call us, have means, and are familiar with the light headedness that comes with a first kiss, and the trembling of hands when we’re truly blow away by a lover standing in front of us.

This romance is timeless and appealing to both the young and green at love and the women who remember so well being swept away by it all, and for those of us who are still there.

I loved the casting – I thought Robert and Kristen were excellent choices for these once in a lifetime roles. I’m excited for New Moon, but will wait with bated breath for Eclipse when Jacob grows into his character!

I know my girlfriends will be right there in the theatre for both pictures on their opening weekends. Rest assured, I will choose this over a Bond flick or anything else that decides to compete against them when they open!

I fully disagree with you oh cynical one. Your predicitions are completely based in your obvious distaste for Ms. Meyers' work. I am glad to say you were full of CRAP on this one. Way wrong call buddy. Way to show us fans! Man, dont go into prediciting the weather!

I liked the movie but not as much as i thought i would. But i think the reason for that is that it was hard for me to not compare the book to the movie. After i saw the movie my initial reaction was that is was a good movie but a bit rushed. Later after seeing it i realised that it was really good and understood why the changes had to be made. I saw it a second time and enjoyed it a lot more that the first time because i judged it as a seperate thing from the book. I didn't think about the changes and forgot about the book and just sat and watched it as if it wasn't a movie interpretaion of a book. It made me appreciate more. Congrats to catherine i think you did an amazing job and am bummed that you aren't doing new moon.

@karina – i think that the changes that they made were not good they missed like most of the most important things out like the note she wrote which revealed most of her feelings. Over all it was still brilliant and i think that the next two books will still do good in the cinemas because stephenie meyer has written them superbly and with so much passion and magic in every word that you feel like your on looker and you can taste the fear in the air.

If any one can find a fault in twilight then compare that to all the good points and you will surely be over ruled by good points that you will feel foolish for even trying to slate this film or the books if i were you i would stop picking on it and let the magic of romance and vampires and very sweet were wolves over take you.

I am a 38 year old married mother of two teenage boys, both of whom laughed hysterically when I picked up Twilight to read it for the first time last week. They said I was too old and all the girls at school were obsessed with it and it wasn't written for people my age. Well the woman who gave me the book was ten years older than I am! I admit that the book kept quiet on my coffee table for a long time. Finally, out of boredom and much urging from others, I picked it up (just to see what all the hoopla was about but not intending to read more than a chapter or two). 6 hours later, I was almost through the entire book. I loved it so much that I went to bed that night thinking of Bella and Edward and awoke the next morning thinking of them too. I thought of them all day at work and couldn't wait to get home to see how it would end. Then I drove to three different stores in a thunderstorm to find the boxed set (they were sold out everywhere). I immediately dove into New Moon and finished it the next evening. I am now about to start Eclipse. I have not seen the movie and will not watch it until I am completely through the books. I have certain images in my head of the setting, the characters, the atmosphere of Forks-I don't yet want to give up the images I have created. I will definitely watch it though and will wait as patiently as I can for the next one to be released. I am a teacher and have read many many books over the years. I have never had a series captivate me as much as this one-not even Harry Potter. The honesty, sincerity, and sweet innocence of the main characters has touched me deeply in a place no fictional character ever has before. I am truly grateful for the experience of Twilight and will read it many times more, no doubt.

I think that the Twilight books are sooooo good… i love them so much. Edward is sooooooo HOT! i think that all guys should be as nice, caring, and respectful as Edward…and if they could be as hot. I don't know how people could hate these books…i can't wait for the other movies. I will say that the movie wasn't what i expected it to be…they cut out a lot of things, but it was still good. I'm reading the third book now and I love it… I can't wait intill I'm finished so i can read the forth one. I wish that my boyfriend was more like Edward… I bet that a lot of girl wish that:) the books are wicked awsome and the movie twilight is too…the other movies are going to be just as good.

@aerinpegadrak: Wow I don't know who you are aerinpegadrak, but I think your way off base if you think there is not a fan base past teens that are crazy about Twilight and any other movies in the series. I am well past even the teen mom's in age and I will be the first in line to buy ticket to New Moon and Eclipse and I can only hope they are bright enough at Summit to make Breaking Dawn. Believe me I am not the only lady or man who is on the Twilight Saga band wagon. All my friends and my children all own all the books and will go to all the movies and buy all the movies. I guess some people just have to be negative. You will be proven wrong when the sales from New Moon soar through the roof. Ha Ha.
