UPDATED: 'Twilight 3' — Best Known as 'Eclipse' — Has a Release Date

No director, but a date for your calendar is announced

UPDATE: Entertainment Weekly is now reporting Chris Weitz will not be returning to direct Eclipse once he completes New Moon. With the two productions looking to film so closely together I can only assume we will have a new director announced relatively soon. The films are not filming simultaneously or back-to-back as previously speculated. There will be a brief gap between the production of both films.

Summit Entertainment has announced (via Deadline Hollywood) a release date for the third film in the Twilight saga as Eclipse will hit theaters on June 30, 2010.

Just yesterday we received the official title treatment for the second film in the franchise New Moon which is just about to get underway with a release date of November 20, 2009. You can check that out here.

There is no director attached to Eclipse yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Weitz continued the franchise should his experience on New Moon be well met by the studio and fans. Eclipse will be based on the third book in Stephenie Meyer's vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?

OMG! I knew it would not be any longer until a date would be shared with all the fans of what EC will come out! Why June? Why not May?

Six months between the films? They're all gonna be working their asses off. I assume this means the special effects aren't going to improve much from the first one either with such limited time.

It's a Wednesday…nearly a month after Memorial Day (US). I would like July 2010. I hope the special effects are not going to be crappy in NM. Perhaps the director who will pick this up will demand some extra time.

I guess the phrase, striking while the iron is hot, is especially pertinent under the circumstances.

Word of advice? Careful not to scare away the audience with all that pandering and force feeding going on.

True. Or worse…dangling "bait" in front of the fans. It will be hard to say what the comments will be with the fans once NM comes out. Whether they like the new director and cast and the whole movie altogether! I was a month and 10 days off of my predication of EC release. It will be next year this time when we find out if Breaking Dawn will be filmed.

They said they will be filming them both at the same time. It would make sense to have about a 6 month difference.

Has anyone seen Chris Wietz' two movies (Golden Compass and About a Boy), I'm sure he has had others before these two. For GC, I think it could have been better–but with 2 top known-name actors: Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig…yes, it would have been better if unknown actors portrayed the characters than known ones. AB, you have Hugh Grant and Toni Colette and I felt that this movie was by far better than GC itself. If the casting director picks a well-known actor for any parts, they will have to pay them more than what should be used in the movie itself!

adnan…you just had to squeeze lemon juice on the wound that could possibly be true…at least I will have Harry Potter and all the comic book movies that are yet to be released! ;)

Wow! 7 months, really? I mean, wow… They're putting these things out quicker than the Saw movies! I'm sorta worried that the quality will suffer for it.

I finally watched "Twilight" for the first time tonight. While I must admit, the onscreen chemistry between Bella & Edward was quite refreshing, the film left much to-be-desired. "Oh look, he sparkles in sunlight" – ummmmm….okay.

Anyways, gotta admit, I liked the tension between the Native American (werewolves) characters and their disdain for the Cullen Vampire Clan, even if it was merely a sidenote. I hope "New Moon" takes the series in a new-dramatic direction (maybe a bigger budget will help).

Just my thoughts.

Special effects are not (only) solution. Take a look at "Let The Right One In". Imagination, people!

they have to put them out quick. I read in an article somewhere that because the vampires dont age and the actors do they had to put them back to back.

To me It makes sense to film them all close as the actors aka vampires arent aging? I would hate to see any actor/actress replaced in the saga. And i hope they will do Breaking Dawn.

Giving Eclipse 6-7 months after New Moon means they're either going to have to do Eclipse production during the filming of New Moon, or they're not and it's going to be extremely craptastic.

I think new moon is going to be a awsome movie. at least the trailors for the new moon movie looked like it was going to be good. I can't wait to see eclipse though I think eclipse was the best book in the twilight saga. I really hope they descide to make breaking dawn into a movie. even if they do have to make it into 3 movies. since the book is divided into 3 sections.
