It certainly doesn't advance the plot, aside from being the catalyst that inspired the vampires to come out of the coffin, as they put it. It's always mentioned, but in the same manner you and I would talk about Coca-Cola. I agree that the televised story is unfolding slowly, although they are mixing elements from later novels into the plotline already. All in all, the show is a nice way to wind down the weekend. The series creates the most original vampire-containing world I've ever seen. It would help if they advanced the main storyline(s) more quickly, but I am content to wait and enjoy the scenery.
