With the Oscars around the corner the frontrunners in just about every single category are going to become quite obvious, such as the Coen brothers for directors, Diablo Cody for original screenplay, the Coens for adapted screenplay, Daniel Day-Lewis for actor and so on and so on, and today we get one more category that seems to be locked up and for good reason.

On Sunday Transformers took home four awards from the Visual Effects Society Awards, including the top prize for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven film. The runner-up was fellow Oscar nominee Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with two. The other Oscar nominee in the visual effects category, The Golden Compass failed to collect a VES nod during the ceremony at Hollywood & Highland.

This, in my estimation, pretty much assures Transformers as a lock for the effects category, but that really should come as no surprise. For all the things I thought were wrong with Transformers the last of them was the effects and Industrial Light + Magic is sure to be celebrating tonight as they worked on both Transformers and Pirates.

Also taking home awards at the ceremony was Pixar's Ratatouille, which took home three awards including winning both VES categories designed for animated motion pictures: outstanding animated character and the newly created category of outstanding effects, as well as supporting visual effects in a motion picture.

Steven Spielberg was awarded the VES Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.
