'Transformers 2' Story Details Revealed

How's your Transformers mythology IQ?

The Fallen

It seems Michael Bay and Co. are going truly geeky with the sequel to Transformers as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will indeed scour the comic book mythology of the robots in disguise and pluck out the story of a robot most casual fans will have no idea of who or what he is before the film hits the bigscreen.

Early rumors were that the title insinuated the story would center around a character by the name of The Fallen and now MTV has learned that to be true thanks to the team at IDW Publishing who is publishing a series of comic books to bridge the gap between the first film and the second.

"[We're going to] explore the background of The Fallen — the main villain of the movie — as well as expand on the 'Reign of Starscream' story that we're doing and tie everything in to what this next movie is going to be," explained writer Chris Mowry to MTV, who partners on the book with artist Alex Milne. "The next movie starts out with just tons of action and there's obviously going to be a lot of questions, so we're hoping to answer some of those beforehand."

Those that remember the finale to Transformers remember a speech given by Optimus Prime calling for the Autobots to head to Earth in an effort to live among the humans and protect them while Starscream flew into space following the death of Megatron. Apparently Starscream's character will be a bit different than what fans of the first generation of "Transformers" are used to, Mowry told MTV, "He's more of like a military guy. So in ‘Destiny' we're going to see a lot more involvement with [the backgrounds of] Prime and Megatron, [as well as] Cybertron's history and how that affects the present day. It all centers around the plot of the sequel which I obviously can't get into. It'll be explained but you'll see a lot more expansion of their characters and their motivations and their destinies, if you will."

A few actual story details are also revealed in the article (found here) and /Film found out according to screenwriter Roberto Orci at Don Murphy's message board that a teaser trailer may be seen in front of Eagle Eye on September 26.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters on June 26, 2009.

Hang on, does this mean the sequel will leave us with questions unless you've read the books they're bringing out before the film?

Nah, I am sure there will be an explosion at the beginning and a robot urination scene to explain it all.

Actually you're probably right, sort of.
It will start with a huge explosion, it's a Michael "I love FX" Bay film.
That fact explains that there's no need for depth to the story.
