I love Gyllenhaal more for his looks than for his great acting and Toby lost some weight, that´s a good sign for a good performance. Kidding. Natalie is also a nice actress but she seems always the same to me. I really liked her in "Closer" and "Anywhere But Here".

"Broken Embraces" thats a magnificent titel, it´s worthy to watch, for sure.

"Brothers" looks very compelling despite the fact that this story is rather stereotypical in its plot line. (Soldier lost in battle, brother steps in to help, falls in love with sister-in-law, lost brother found alive, returns, heartache and conflict ensues.)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maquire show their strength as actors, the personal authenticity that they are both so good at portraying, the beat for beat that matches the rythmn of real life. I'm not feeling Natalie Portman here because, for one, she seems too young for the role. She looks like a college kid, not the mother of two grade school age children. But this looks like a strong production. They should have rethought the title though, if you search "Brothers" on IMDb, you get a list the length of the screen.

Penelope Cruz is one of the finest actresses working today. But she seems to be specializing in campy, highly emotional roles that freeze frame on her beauty. I'm not feeling this one ("Broken Embraces") and doubt it will find a wide audience.

Broken Embraces looks amazing and really when has Penelope Cruz turned in a bad performance in a Almodovar film? (Hell I'm still slightly pissed that she lost that oscar for Volver.)
As for Brothers, still have hope but that trailer was awful (I had a good laugh with that little kid yelling though.) Hopefully I'm wrong and it turns out to be great considering all the talent involved.

Also, "Broken Embraces" looks to be another hit for Almodovar. Does anyone remember if there was any word from Cannes on this film?

I completely forgot that "Brothers" was due out this year. Gyllenhaal and Maquire really look their parts and could possibly turn out some great performances. I wasn't really impressed with the rest of this trailer, though…

Brothers feels like a mixed bag of genres…I dunno how it might do come Oscar season. I think Broken Embraces might be better, it certainly looks better.

Putting Jake and Tobey in the same movie is annoying as I struggle to tell the pair apart. Though the movie does remind me that Maguire can go beyond Spiderman occasionally.
