Oh sounds very good i'll definitely be catching that when it comes out, which it won't for a while as i'm in Europe but i'll look forward to it. Mirren just brings a touch of class to anything she does. Have you seen the Prime Suspect series that she did for BBC television? I'm not sure how many series there are but its brilliant television and was done way before she became really famous worldwide. Also if your into crime drama look out for Cracker, another BBC series with John Coltrane from the Harry Potter movies. Scottish guy. Very good also.

I'm also like you i read up on most movies i see but happened to see Twilight this week with no prior knowledge except it was adapted from a book series and was about vampires! I quite liked it, certainly wasn't perfect but for a 'vampire' movie it was good. My sister on the other hand who asked me to go see it with her hated it!! No accounting for taste is there!

@<a href="#comment-7566" rel="nofollow">casey</a>:

Yes, I really did! I'm a longtime fan of Crowe's, but I tend to agree with you. He's always solid, but there's been something missing in the last few movies. For me, at least, SOP is the best thing he's done since Cinderella Man (which I loved). You know that feeling that you sometimes get watching an actor -- that they really liked playing a character? That was the feeling I had watching Crowe in SOP.

As to Rachel McAdams, I think the only thing I've seen her in is The Family Stone, and I liked her in that. For the most part, the other films she's made are just not my cup of tea, and I haven't seen them. I thought she did a fine job in SOP. It's a substantial role, and she definitely rose to the occasion. It's always nice to see one of the young actresses in Hollywood get to play something besides the 'girlfriend.'

Helen Mirren is fabulous, as always. It's a fairly small role, especially for an actress of her caliber, but she does get the line that got the biggest laugh from the audience. And yes, even though this is a drama/thriller, there are some very funny moments, although you certainly wouldn't know it from that trailer!

I haven't seen the original British mini-series, so I can't compare the two, but I'm sort of glad that I hadn't seen it before I saw this version (although I plan to see it now). I went in knowing nothing about the story except the barebones info that has been around in the pre-publicity, so I had few expectations, and it turned out to be terrific. Sometimes I think we rob ourselves of part of the joy of movies by knowing so much about them before we even see them, although, like any other movie lover, I can't keep myself away from the info most of the time. I saw this one about a week before Christmas, and I came out thinking, "Merry Christmas to me!!"

Really did you see it? Who's does the best acting ? I like Crowe but his movies lately have been dull. Mirren is always good. Mcadams as i said i can do without but maybe more serious roles suit her?

Wow! What a terrible trailer!

I saw a test screening of this movie a couple of weeks ago and loved it, but if I were basing whether I wanted to see it on this trailer, I'd be going, "Ho hum. Well . . . maybe." Sure hope they get a better trailer up soon, because this one certainly doesn't do it justice.

One of my major thoughts coming out of the screening was 'I love the script, especially the dialog!' However, if I were just seeing this trailer, I would agree with Theo!

What the hell is wrong with Hollywood marketing departments these days?! They act like they don't have a brain between the lot of them.

Generic is right and the dialogue seems trite and hackneyed. Even Mirren seems stilted. Looks like the script really did need work after all. The brilliant original British State of Play is readily available - watch that.
