This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: September 22, 2009

Star Trek domination, a bit of Criterion and 30 Rock

The Paul Newman Tribute Collection
I just received this box set earlier today so I haven't had a chance to do anything more than open it and peek through the 136-page book, which has details on each film included as well as accompanying images. The movies in the set are The Long, Hot Summer, Rally ‘Round the Flag, Boys!, From the Terrace, Exodus, The Hustler Collector’s Edition, Hemingway’s Adventures of a Young Man, What a Way to Go!, Hombre, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Collector’s Edition, The Towering Inferno Special Edition, Buffalo Bill and the Indians Or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson, Quintet and The Verdict Collector’s Edition.

The set is priced at $62.99 at Amazon, which means you are looking at approximately $4.89 per movie and as you can see you are getting the 2-disc collector's editions of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Hustler, The Verdict and The Towering Inferno. I don't know about you, but I think that's a pretty good deal. I expect to have a full review next week.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection
and Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection
I don't know if Paramount is going to send a review copy of this collection late like they did with the Blu-ray collection of the first six Star Trek films, which is available this week for the first time on DVD, but as it stands I don't have this four-film collection made up of films with the Star Trek: Next Generation crew. Of the films included, First Contact is really the only good one in my opinion, but I would expect most completists would like to have all of them if you've already purchased the earlier box set. Also available this week are the individual Blu-ray editions of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek VIII: First Contact. All of these titles are linked in the "Buy Now" button directly below, so pick your poison.

Star Trek (Original Series) – The Complete Second Season
Yup, more "Trek" this week with the second Blu-ray installment of the original television series and I was told my review copy is on the way so hopefully in the midst of watching all those Paul Newman films I will be able to knock this one out as well. Either way, this is a must buy in my opinion, but I think regular readers already knew that.

Pierrot le fou (Criterion Collection)
I have one more documentary to watch on Criterion's Blu-ray presentation of Jean-Luc Godarad's Pierrot Le Fou and I am still working on my opinion of this film after seeing it for the first time. On first watch it would appear to be a lot to take in, but the more you think about it it's actually rather simple. Is it any good? I'm not really ready to say, but I don't think I will be recommending it as a blind buy even if it is one of the more engaging Godard films I have watched, but I still have plenty of his to see.

The Complete Monterey Pop Festival (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Now this one I just reviewed and you can read that right here. I also talked about this title in my What I Watched column this past Sunday. So, I think there are plenty of places for you to find out my opinion on this one. Have at it.

30 Rock – Season Three
Ugh, yup, as if there wasn't enough for me to watch and review I still have the second half of this collection to review, but like "Star Trek" I absolutely love this show. Is it worth the buy? I guess that depends on how you look at it. This may be a good show to just wait until it comes to an end and just buy the complete series at once. Either way, I would definitely say it's a show worth having in the house.

Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz
Two fantastic films come home to Blu-ray with plenty of features and goodies to enjoy. Each comes with Blu-ray exclusive pop-up trivia tracks as well as several commentaries — Hot Fuzz has five commentaries for example. To say these two Blu-rays don't have what every fan wants and needs would be a lie. These are well-produced packages worth the buy.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
I gave this film a C+ when I reviewed it and I think it's a solid one-night rental, but I would never recommend a buy with this one unless you've seen it and love it. Are there any folks out there in that camp?

Observe and Report
I have no idea what to say about this one as it caused a small date rape controversy when it was released and made virtually zero impression on the box-office. Overall, it's not a very good movie, but I would say it's at the very least worth the rental. The Blu-ray comes with a picture-in-picture commentary I intend to watch one of these days with Rogen, Farris and director Jody Hill and the gag reel may be worth a watch. Hell, I may have to give this one a review as well.

Battle for Terra
I think some people were telling me the storyline here seems a lot like James Cameron's upcoming Avatar. I was also told it wasn't half bad and just didn't get the marketing necessary to gain a theatrical audience. Sounds to me like it may be worth a rental and perhaps a buy if you have some kids at home interested in sci-fi animation.

In case anyone was wondering, "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" have been available in the States on Blu-Ray for a while, but they were formally Best Buy exclusives. Now they're available everywhere.
