This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: September 15, 2009

Wolverine leads a relatively weak, but large list of new titles

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
I wish DVD and Blu-ray sales were more readily available, because it will be interesting to see what kind of business this title does. Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch.

The Ultimate Force of Four
Hero / Zatoichi / Iron Monkey / The Legend of Drunken Master
Buena Vista Home Entertainment sent me these and I am going to be watching all four and bring you a review hopefully by the end of the week. All four of these films are available separately as well as in a four pack and Hero is also being released on a two-disc special edition. Of the bunch I have never seen Iron Monkey or Drunken Master, but I have seen both Hero Zatoichi. Hero didn't impress me as much as it did everyone else the first time I saw it, but I haven't watched it since and am anxious to give it another go. Zatoichi I watched way back in 2004 when it hit DVD and it wasn't all that bad, but I wasn't particularly impressed with the overuse of CGI. You can read my age-old review right here, but don't expect it to be all that great, I like to tell myself my writing has improved since then.

John Carpenter: Master of Fear Collection
Wes Craven Horror Collection
I discussed the Wes Craven collection in my What I Watched column on Sunday and hope to do the same with the John Carpenter Collection this Sunday, time permitting of course since I already told you I hope to watch the four movies above as well and have a trio of other DVDs on my counter so it may take me another week, but I fully intend on giving them a look. I was surprised at the quality of the picture on the Craven collection and the price can't be beat. Give the Buy Now button a click and see for yourself, it's a cheap way to get seven fun horrors for the upcoming Halloween season.

An American Werewolf in London (Full Moon Edition)
I watched this one when it came to HD DVD and I know it's considered a cult classic, but I can't necessarily claim membership to said cult. This isn't to say I think it's all that bad of a film. The story is interesting and the effects by Rick Baker are impressive, but it just doesn't move my dial one way or another. However, with this Full Moon Edition one thing I am interested in watching is the new feature length documentary that is included as well as a conversation with Rick Baker regarding his work on this film as well next February's The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro.

Army of Darkness (Screwhead Edition)
Ugh, Sam Raimi's goofy action comedies just don't do it for me and this is another example. I put the Blu-ray in hoping to give it another chance and review it and just couldn't get beyond the silly menus. I'll admit I need to be in the right mood for this kind of film in order to give it a fair shake and that obviously wasn't the moment so I won't say anymore. However, I am looking forward to the release of Raimi's Drag Me To Hell on October 13, that was a fun feature.

Hannibal Lector Anthology
Priced at $45.49 at Amazon I would say this is a pretty good deal as you get the best version of Thomas Harris's "Red Dragon" in Michael Mann's Manhunter and then The Silence of the Lambs and Ridley Scott's decent Hannibal. I may add this one to my Xmas wishlist.

The Wolf Man (Universal Legacy Series)
I already own the Universal Classic Monsters version of this film and suggest everyone at least give this film a watch once. It is definitely my favorite of the Universal Monster films, but that isn't saying much since they are all great. If you plan on seeing the new film next February you owe it to yourself to see the original first. It deserves your appreciation. I included both the new version and the original Legacy version in the Buy Now link below. Make your choice and don't look back!

Easy Virtue
I saw this film earlier this year but never took the time to review it. It's not that bad and Jessica Biel is good in the lead role, but I wouldn't recommend you buy it. Give it a rent and then watch Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game and come back and tell me what scene they comedically duplicated.

Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Season 4
I loved the first two seasons of this show, but then it became popular and they began trying too hard to be funny. The film lost its charm at the beginning of the third season and I haven't been back since. FX recently sent me the first four episodes of the fifth season and I am considering giving it a second chance. Anyone out there watch this show want to encourage me one way or the other?

CSI: Miami – The Complete Seventh Season
David Caruso is an awful, awful actor, but this show is so awful it would be nothing without him. I don't know how it happened, but I have fallen in love with Caruso's long stares off in the distance, his sunglass fidgeting and his stupid one-liners to the point I watched all of the seventh season episodes of "C.S.I. Miami" on Netflix Instant Play and can't wait for the next season to begin. Would I ever buy one of these seasons? No, but watching the episodes one time is a treat.

if you think David Caruso is an awful actor, which I did, check out Session 9. he's actually quite good in that, along with the movie

For whatever reason, Easy Virtue grated on my nerves from beginning to end, other than Firth, who is always dependable but in it for like 10 minutes.

The DVD and BluRay sales do take a while to be released. I usually check out this site which gives weekly updates on DVD sales: http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/weekly/thisweek.php

Remember the good old days when you could also check the DVD rental sales numbers? Now its all these crazy ratios and no solid figures. I wish those numbers were still up…I have no idea why they made the switch.

I guess CSI: Miami is a guilty pleasure for you. Don't be ashamed…well ya, be ashamed. But I can't really bash you too much as I like the bad acting in Smallville (the now Superman, tweeny-friendly soap opera on prime time).

Don't forget another damn Barbie movie is out (Barbie and the 3 Musketeers). My daughter always makes me go out and rent it.

@Steve:

At least she doesn't make you go out and buy it. You're only losing $6 (or $1 if you rent from Redbox or DVDPlay) as opposed to a $20 DVD purchase.

I agree with you on "Wolverine" Brad, it's a dumb, dumb, dumb (and unnecessary) movie but it's fun and entertaining while it lasts. The "X-Men" (and for that matter, most other superhero movies that aren't "Spider Man 2" and the Nolan "Batman" movies) don't hold up after repeat viewings; this one is no different.

I was actually waiting for an extended cut for Wolverine to come out. The theatrical version felt a bit rushed, even though it was entertaining. Any news on an extended cut for this one?
