This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: October 27, 2009

Not a very impressive list of films this week

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Ugh, I did not like this movie and, like the sequels to Shrek, will never be returning to watch it. There must come a point during the writers' meetings where the inevitable poop or sex joke enters the dialogue and people snicker and laugh, and perhaps even the whole room begins rolling and shouting between breaths, "That's great! Keep that in there." Then the movie gets made and animated little characters are regurgitating these lines and unless you have the mental capacity of a 12-year-old or are so easily amused all it takes is a poop joke to get you to laugh you sit and stare in bewilderment, unimpressed and shocked this is the best they can come up with. My theatrical review is here.

Orphan
I just reviewed the Blu-ray for this, which you can read right here, but in short it's terrible, too long and has an awful ending with characters too dumb to be trusted with sharp objects. I'm not sure, but I don't think WB will be using any quotes from me in their marketing on this one.

Whatever Works
Not an entirely bad movie, Whatever Works has plenty of laughs, but the film never hits a real stride. The casting of Larry David seemed almost too on the nose. You can read my theatrical review from back in June right here.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
I have this, but haven't watched it yet and I'm not sure how quickly I will rush to give it a spin. I watched the entire "Battlestar Galactica" series and it's pretty good, but I'm not sure how interesting the story before the story is to me, but right now I know it's not a top priority.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure
I was sort of shocked to be reminded I reviewed the Blu-ray for the first Tinker Bell film, but sure enough there it was. However, when told the second one would be coming my way I wasn't likely to give it any more coverage than you see here. However, I did just receive the following video so I felt I would add it to the proceedings. So that's why you get the film's theme song, "Gift of a Friend," performed by Demi Lovato. Yay!

Z (Criterion Collection)
I watched this for the first time just under a year ago when I was putting together a list of top ten assassination films and it just didn't move me all that much, but I am convinced it is primarily due to all the great acclaim it received (2 Oscars) and how great I had already heard it was. I went in looking for, and expecting one thing and came away disappointed. I will give it another watch one of these days, but I won't be picking up this new Criterion special edition.

Anyone know why Sony would release a $100 million blockbuster aimed at children AFTER christmas? It just seems like poor planning to me.

@John Debono: Well before Christmas would be way too soon. Imagine if Sony got it released on Dec. 22, it would be just over 3 months after its release in theaters. Studios very rarely release their films on DVD that fast, I for one still don't understand why the hell Paramount decided to release G.I. Joe on DVD 2 months and 26 days after its release in theaters.

Poor "Janky Promoters". It could've been like a crappy but still more mainstream "Next Day Air" type film. I'm sure if they had released it in theaters, it would've made it's budget back, especially if they played it up like the return of "Friday".

Oh and I have to see "Whatever Works" because Larry David is honestly my hero. Rental probably.
