This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: May 26, 2009

Not a whole lot to look at, but a couple to consider

Falling Down
I just posted my review of the Blu-ray edition of the new Warner Bros. release of Falling Down, which you can read here. It was the first time I had seen the 1993 release and while I liked it I can't immediately recommend it as a blind buy for anyone that hasn't seen it in the past. It's a film that depends on the audience's acceptance of the storyline, since it slowly unravels and can be considered quite scattered when the ending is still yet unknown. However, it's definitely a film to check out and one I would bet many will truly love if you don't already.

Universal Blu-ray
Children of Men / Seabiscuit / Field of Dreams / Cinderella Man / Spy Game
Father's Day isn't until June 21, but if you dad has a soft spot for Blu-ray films Universal has released a handful of titles that certainly appeal to the male of the house. Of the five new catalog titles Universal is releasing today I would say Seabiscuit is the only one I haven't rewatched with any form of regularity. Children of Men I absolutely loved, Field of Dreams is a film for damn near everyone, Cinderella Man is a film I enjoy even though it never really connected with audiences in 2005 and Spy Game is a must own if you ask me (not to mention a title I accidentally listed as hitting shelves last week, oops).

All five are titles Universal originally released on HD DVD as the studio gets closer and closer to completely replacing the many titles they released on the now dead high-def format. In the case of these five they are merely replacement discs and don't come with any new features outside of an audio upgrade from Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 to DTS and the fact each disc contains an additional 20 gigabytes of storage space.

As for recommendations, I obviously like all five of these movies, but I would say Children of Men and certainly Spy Game are the must owns, Field of Dreams and Cinderella Man are titles to buy if your wallet can spare it and then Seabiscuit for purchase only if you know you love it enough to watch it more than once.

You can click the "Buy Now" button to take your pick. All are listed at Amazon for $19.99 outside of Spy Game, which is $20.99 for some reason.

Killshot
Killshot was another one of those abandoned Weinstein Co. releases that saw a widest release of five theaters back in early January. The film stars Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Thomas Jane and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which makes me think it really must not be all that good if the Weinsteins weren't even interested in trying to capitalize on Rourke's Wrestler success, but who knows?

The film is directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and adapted from Elmore Leonard's best-selling crime novel centering on a husband and wife who get caught up with a con artist and his over-the-hill hitman partner. I don't know, sounds like it could be good to me.

Powder Blue
The only story being generated out of this film is the fact Jessica Biel has a nude scene as she plays a single mother stripping to raise money to save her terminally ill son. Considering the film stars Biel, Forest Whitaker, Ray Liotta and Patrick Swayze you would think this one would have something else to talk about but it appears that's about it as it hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves without a theatrical release. I did receive a screener, but haven't thrown it in the player just yet and not sure if I ever will.

New in Town
This film received terrible reviews and considering its early year release it doesn't necessarily surprise me, but I have a feeling some people will get some enjoyment out of it at home. All the bad movies are better in the comfort of your own home aren't they?

From what I can tell the film involves Renee Zellweger falling in love with Harry Connick Jr. in the middle of nowhere. I also understand there are some life lessons learned. Yeah, it's a really high-concept feature.

Land of the Lost: The Complete Series
One week before the feature film adaptation of the 1974 television series Universal releases the complete original series in a regular box set or a collectible lunchbox style packaging. The set comes with all 43 episodes from the show's three season run and a feature looking at the new Will Ferrell film, which hits theaters on June 5 (more on that here).

I have never seen an episode of this show, but Universal did send me the lunchbox tin to take a look at and I definitely intend on giving it a once over and depending on my reaction I may have to do a write-up about it, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
