This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: March 3, 2009

New titles and 'Slumdog' has a release date

I apologize for the delay in publishing today's newly released DVDs and Blu-rays, but I posted enough articles last night I didn't want anything to get buried and it appears it was the right decision as only minutes ago I received word Slumdog Millionaire will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on March 31, which wouldn't have made it into the report had I posted any earlier. As for today's releases there are a couple of titles worth noting that you may want to pick up including a film that I believe was the biggest Oscar snub of the year.

Let's see what's out there…

I've Loved You So Long
Here it is, right off the bat. The biggest Oscar snub did not belong to The Dark Knight it belonged to the absence of I've Loved You So Long which at the very least deserved nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress if not Picture, Director, Screenplay and Score. If you like great movies and not just movies with people that dress up in costumes give this one a try, you won't be disappointed. My full Blu-ray review can be found right here.

The Silence of the Lambs
I would say this is the week's only other title worthy of consideration of actually buying. Fox hasn't sent me a review copy (yet) so I can't tell you how good the picture looks or what all it offers in the way of time-wasting featurettes, but I think we all pretty much agree this is a great thriller with one of cinema's classic modern villains.

Australia
I never thought I would review, talk about or see Australia again and it seems things are living up to that expectation even though I recently told a publicist I would give it a second chance. I was supposed to be sent an exclusive look at the features from the film as well as a Blu-ray for review, but while the video arrived the Blu-ray did not so I haven't promoted it just yet. You can watch the video which is right here and should the Blu-ray ever arrive I may give it a review now, but I really don't see the point any longer since my opinion on this film is so bad.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua
If you already read my theatrical review or my just posted Blu-ray review you know I am not a fan of this film, but I also admit I am not the audience as much as I have no idea who exactly the audience truly is. If it's you, please let me know what demographic you fit in so I will know for future reference.

Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic
I received the Blu-ray version of this only yesterday as I was walking out the door to see the actual film, but I can tell you this one does not excite me in the least after watching the first episode a long while back on iTunes. I wrote about it back in July 2008 saying:

I guarantee you guys that if you just ran out and picked up the novel for yourself it wouldn't take nearly as long, it would be slightly rewarding to say you read something and you wouldn't even have to worry about the male voice for the female characters.

I will say one thing though, if you don't know how to read the words are also included, popping up as the character speaks "Sesame Street" style. It adds a sort of educational value to it all I would say.

Sorry, I can't offer a ringing endorsement on this one.

Brad, no offence, but why are you ripping on Beverly Hills Chihuahua so bad? What did this movie do to you to get such a reaction man? I follow this site daily and I've never seen you trash a movie with this much passion lol Theatrical review, blu-ray review and even a quick jab in the DVD Releases section. Why is it so puzzling to know who this movie was made for. Disney movie? Talking chihuahuas? I dunno, maybe they made this movie for kids? I personally took a 4 year old and a 12 year old and they both seemed to enjoy it. Hey, I'm 23 and I didn't find it THAT bad. I mean you know exactly what you're getting before renting it you know what I mean? I've seen plenty worse movies, kid flicks or others. So why must you constantly remind us how much you didn't like this one? We get it dude, ease up a bit lol

@Roger: Thank you for tossing in the occasional "lol" and when I ask who the audience is I wonder if it is just little girls or little boys or both? For some reason I just can't wrap my head around this one… didn't mean to be overly harsh.

It's cool man, I like your style of writing and humour. I just thought it was odd to see so much bashing for one movie.

I get what you mean now for either boys or girls. It seems like the movie was thrown out there and whoever can grab it can have it, you know?

Sorry about those "lol"s, I tend to use that a lot, just meant I was writing lightly, not like an attack.

@Roger: No need to apologize for the "lol"s, I was serious when I said I was glad you put them in there and knew exactly why. :)

But yeah, that is exactly what I mean about the audience because the sense of humor in that film is across the board and from what I could grasp onto twenty-something girls that owned chihuahuas seemed to be the most excited fanbase.

It's got potential to be the best DVD of the year .
