This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: June 23, 2009

Criterion leads the way with a couple of obscure selections

Last week I took a quick peek at the titles coming out this week and noticed a very small selection. Wouldn't you know I had accidentally added Inkheart and Confessions of a Shopaholic as releasing on June 23, 2006. I guess it doesn't really matter what year you release either of those titles since the same people that buy everything are likely to be the ones picking them up, but for those without bottomless wallets I offer my quick opinion on what may interest you this week on DVD and Blu-ray…

Oh, and don't forget to check out the new release dates at the end as the date for the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray has been announced along with Blu-ray release dates for Gladiator, Forrest Gump and Braveheart.

Last Year at Marienbad (Criterion Collection)
I just wrote up my review of the Blu-ray edition of this film and it is rather long so I will give you a quick snippet and then a link to the full review:

This is not a film for everyone and I will only suggest it to those of you that enjoy looking deeper into a film, beyond the surface level and have the patience to stick with a style of storytelling that is far from traditional.

You can click here to read the full review and if the above description sounds like something that may interest you, I strongly suggest you give the review a read. I thought this was a great movie.

My Dinner with Andre (Criterion Collection)
I also just posted my review of this one, but I wasn't as impressed with it as I was Marienbad. Instead I ended the review saying, "Personally, I came away annoyed. I may return to this film one day, but not any time soon." The film is a talking heads picture, which is entirely up my alley, but one head gets to talking a little long for my taste before the other steps and it tells him to ease up. I think a rental should suffice, but you can read my full review right here for a more detailed break down.

Waltz with Bashir
Meh, this film caught on with most critics last year, but it didn't really do much for me. It is intriguing and the final moments are certainly a shock to the system, but overall it wasn't that great, and I certainly don't believe it is anything worth buying as I can't see any reason why you would want to watch it more than once. A rental should more than take care of your desire to see this one.

Confessions of a Shopaholic
Ugh, I passed off the reviewing of this Blu-ray to Sara and I just posted her review (read it here). She pretty much comes to the same conclusion I would have, but I actually think she is even nicer than I would have been. This movie was a real stinker. I gave it the D- treatment in my theatrical review here.

Inkheart
Stinker alert #2! I gave Inkheart a D+ when I reviewed it back in January and I had no intentions of revisiting it again to review the Blu-ray… Come to think of it… Maybe I should pass that one Sara's way too.
Buy Inkheart
The Pink Panther 2
I have seen and own all of Peter Sellers's Pink Panther films and as it stands I have seen neither of Steve Martin's. I think I'll keep it that way.

I am still awaiting for the Lord of the Rings extended cut editions on Blu Ray. Those were brilliant.

"Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" didn't release on Blu-Ray yet? Alright then, instant purchase come September.

I do have the HD-DVD version of "Fuzz" if anyone's interested. Anyone…anyone?
