This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: August 4, 2009

Wow, things do not look impressive this week

Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these.

The Soloist
The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it.

Mutant Chronicles
This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that.

Race to Witch Mountain
Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may be entertained by the fact it has moving images, but I have a feeling even they will be able to see through this mess.

Obsessed
I have no interest in ever seeing this movie, but at least it had that fun little viral website to play with.

Delgo
I can't remember how long ago it was that I added this movie to the RopeofSilicon database, but here is one article I wrote about the film back in 2004 and I don't think that was the first time I mentioned it, but considering I started this site in 2003 there isn't much farther I can go back. That said, it has finally come full circle and is arriving on DVD. Good on yah Delgo… I have to worry about you no longer.

The Waterboy and Sling Blade
Not sure what most of you think about Sling Blade, but while it was a well-acted movie I never really had much interest in it. Waterboy, while mildly comical, is a film I look at as the major turning point in Adam Sandler's comedic career. I didn't mind Big Daddy, but after Waterboy we got Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, The Longest Yard, Click and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Talk about a streak of awful. Hopefully he is done with these stupid comedies and will give us more films like Reign Over Me and Punch Drunk Love from now on and no more Zohan's.
