This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: August 18, 2009

Criterion classics and Dexter Season 3 lead the way

It's nice to see we have a pretty decent week for new releases after a couple of awful previous weeks. From two new Criterion Blu-rays, to "Dexter" and even The Last Starfighter on Blu-ray in 25th Anniversary format. On top of that, there are a few titles in the new release date section I am sure many of you will be interested in saving up for.

Lots to talk about, let's get into it…

Criterion Collection Blu-ray
Kagemusha and Play Time
It's hard for me not to simply tell you to rush out and buy both of these right now, but if you were to confront me with the question of "Buy? Don't Buy?" that's exactly what I would tell you to do. I just posted my separate reviews for both Akira Kurosawa's samurai feature Kagemusha and Jacques Tati's comedy Play Time and have linked them both below. Give them both a read and then decide. Hopefully I was able to help you in your decision making because otherwise I would just say buy them both and enjoy.

Buy Kagemusha (Criterion Collection)
Dexter – The Complete Third Season
I was shocked to see this one on this week's release schedule only because I haven't yet received my review copy and I can't wait to dig into this third season. I absolutely love this show and if that season three Blu-ray shows up soon, expect a review shortly thereafter. So, unfortunately I can't tell you if this third season is worth buying, but I can tell you the first two definitely are if TV on DVD is your thing.

The Last Starfighter 25th Anniversary (Blu-ray)
Talk about a guilty pleasure from the past eh? I'm not quite sure if The Last Starfighter is actually a good movie or just one I enjoy the hell out of simply because I watched it damn near 100 times when I was younger when it seemed to run on repeat on HBO, or if I would enjoy it no matter what, but suffice to say this is a sci-fi from the '80s I truly enjoy and have no problem recommending to those of you that like goofy little space features.

The Last House on the Left
Ugh, one of the worst movies of the year.

The Last House on the Left is in an epic battle in my mind with I Love You Beth Cooper for the crown of worst film of 2009 at this very moment and as of this moment the judges have declared it a draw, but I'm sure one or the other will deliver the knock-out blow before the year is out. My advice, forget this movie ever existed and if you want my reasoning click here.

Buy The Last House on the Left
Hannah Montana: The Movie
The Blu-ray for this one arrived and I almost considered giving it a watch simply because the only thing I have ever seen Miley Cyrus do is say Angelina Jolie is one of her "favorite people in all history" at last year's Oscars. However, since I didn't watch it I will point you to this review by Eric Snider, which should give you a laugh, or two, or three, or many….

Tyson
Meh, this one is a'ight, but for anyone that knows anything about Mike Tyson or followed the boxer's career at all there is very little to learn here other than to finally hear Iron Mike say everything in one fell swoop. It isn't a bad documentary by any means, but will primarily serve the uninitiated far better, which makes me think most movie critics aren't sports fans considering the overwhelming love for this film and its 83 score on MetaCritic.

Personally, Tyson may be my favorite thing to come out all year, and I am an avid sports fan. It it's so much the material that's new, rather, how it's being delivered through Tyson himself, who is a cacophony of contradictions.

Any idea on when Lionsgate plans to release Facing Ali?

I'd rank the Dexter seasons in order: first is best, third is worst. The series is still way better than most other shows. I find it odd that they'd hire Jimmy Smits to play essentially the same character as in his failed Cane series. Worth the watch though as season four looks amazing.

Hey lookeverybody, a new Army of Darkness edition. Didn't see that coming.
