‘The Spirit’ Isn’t Impressing Anyone with Its Trailers

The latest one has just arrived and it at least has decent music

It seems the online fanboy verdict on Frank Miller’s The Spirit is out and the film doesn’t even hit theaters for another 4 months. The footage from Comic Con that got absolutely no one excited has found it’s way online and I can see now why people didn’t enjoy it. The supposed humor put forth in the clip just isn’t funny and it appears comedy is the goal of the clip, which makes the action utterly worthless.

Not helping the situation are the trailers for the film that make it look like a Sin City knock-off and considering it isn’t Sin City, that poses a bit of a problem.

I will admit
the latest trailer that just hit the Net is probably the best one yet, but after reading the synopsis and its focus on the hero character The Spirit versus the villainous Octopus (Sam Jackson) I can’t understand why the trailers are pushing this idea of the women in the film. Is the city The Spirit is trying to save a den of prostitutes and nymphomaniacs? I have to assume as much since they all seem drawn to some douche running around with a mini mask on his face. Also, what gives with the synopsis trying to compare this film to Batman Begins? What a cheap way to sell your film.

Anyway, the new trailer is below, and maybe it is just the music that got me liking it a little more, but overall it still doesn’t look all that good.

Well, Mr. Brad Brevet, I cannot agree with you at all. I work at a movie theater and am pretty much a movie fanatic, meaning any conversation a person strikes up with me is going to lead to movies. The trailer for the Spirit is one of my favorites, and I watch it on my PSP all the time (along with Watchmen). In talking to customers at the theater and other people, I’ve never heard someone say they hated it or that it looks like a Sin City knockoff. I think it is impressing people. And, the fact is, it looks like Sin City because it is one of the comics that inspired it. Just look at some images from the comic and you’ll see. And, for good measure, nobody got excited at Comic-Con because that’s an old trailer. They probably saw it attached to Dark Knight 4 or 5 times now.

I think it is a pretty good trailer. While the look of the film is pretty much the same as Sin City, Miller has still managed to make it look a little different. I have never read the comics and I have seen a bad TV film or something years ago about the Spirit, so I don’t know or care much him, but this trailer makes this film a must-see-in-cinema. It could be bad but it’s definitely worth seeing.

Perhaps I should clarify, when I say it isn’t "Impressing Anyone" in the headline I am referring to many folks talking about the film online, not a blanket statement of everyone.

That’s why I said "online fanboy verdict" in the very first line. I do my best to explain myself, but I do ask that people read. This is to say, I am not specifically talking about you.

Umm, they showed more than the trailer at Comic Con. I had to sit in Hall H and write about the footage for this site. And well, the scenes they showed were horrible. HORRIBLE! Admittedly I only saw 2 of the 3 scenes shown (I had to leave for some reason that I forget now), but the third scene shown sounded just awful as the first 2.

As for the trailer, I do admit the song is fantastic. Otherwise the only thing this movie has going for it is a smoking hot Scarlett Johansson.

Oh, well, you shouldn’t be surprised. Fanboys are a strange and superstitious lot.
