'The Hangover' Hangs On at the Box-Office Over 'Up'

We may have found our break-out hit of the summer

Variety was the first to report the shift at the top of the overall weekend box-office, but their report didn't include conclusive numbers, which have since arrived bringing word the new Warner Bros. comedy The Hangover was able to narrowly hold on to its Friday box-office lead and take the #1 slot over Pixar's Up.

Of course this doesn't mean a whole lot outside of bragging rights, but since weekend box-office reports have become a larger part of the RopeofSilicon weekend news cycle I felt it was important to keep things accurate.

Up's weekend receipts only dropped $.1 million after receipts were calculated brining its total down to $44.1 million, but it was The Hangover that exceded estimates by $1.7 million giving it a three-day total of $44.9 million and the box-office crown.

Things didn't get any better for Universal, though, as Land of the Lost dropped another $.7 million down to $18.8 million for the weekend ending in third.

Final top ten numbers for the weekend can be found right here. Laremy will be here Thursday with updated weekend projections, hope to see you join in the conversation.

Oh, and regular box-office commenter Chuck Bartowski wanted a nod for his weekend predictions so I will give him one here… Good on yah, see you next week!

Great for Hangover. WB should be celebrating since it went way beyond even their loftiest expectations. Consequently, I'm certain Disney/Pixar aren't that bummed at all since UP dropped a mere 35%, which puts the film on course for at least 270mil and quite possibly 300mil. Word of mouth is definitely fueling both The Hangover and UP, and I see it resulting in longevity for both in the B.O. in the coming weeks.

Next week is going to be another close call imho. I see Pelham123 around 30-35mil, but I see UP and Hangover around 28-33mil too.

Hopefully the studios will take this as a hint to make more comedies for adults. Those pictures at the end of the movie were hilarious!

@Tim:

Well, they already took the hint. Do you wonder why films such as "Observe and Report", "I Love You Man" and "Role Models" are coming out within months of each other? It's because the formula of man-children + dirty language + R-rating= box office success (w/ the exception of "Report") all thanks to Apatow of course.

It just means that we'll be getting a bunch of low-budget ripoffs now, probably starring Jason Biggs and some other guys who need the money.

I have a feeling "Imagine That" is up to the task of supplanting LotL as the bigger bomb. Then again, maybe LotL already has that title already sewn up since I don't think "Imagine That" cost 100mil to make and another 100mil or so to market.

I bet that Pelham 123 takes next weekend with 50 million dollars, with Hangover falling to 30 million. Up will come in 3rd with 25 million, and Imagine that with 20 million.

UP and Hangover will continue to do well. Word of mouth for UP has already hit the ground running by only easing 35% this weekend. Hangover should benefit from word of mouth as well. Both films are going to challenge for the no.1 spot. By no means is Pelham123 a lock to be no.1 this weekend with UP and Hangover remaining potent. It will be a very interesting weekend.

Am I the only one who believes Pelham will have an opening no larger than Land of the Lost did, if not less? I find this movie lacks excitement and in the midst of friendlier, happy movies (Hangover, Up, Land of the Lost, Imagine That, Night at the Museum 2) I find this thriller with Travolta as a villain seems a little out of place for this time of year.
