@ Brad Brevet: What exactly was show special about The Incredible Hulk? I mean, Marvel financed two big-budget, Summer, Comic Book films in 2008; did you not see Iron Man? How do you pick the big Green vs. Iron Man? I do like the rest of your picks.

Note: I liked Hulk; hope a sequel will be greenlit.

I definitely didn't get to the theaters enough this year, I don't have a full top ten - at least not based on everything released. However, my favs for 2008 thus far are (in no particular order):

The Dark Knight
Eagle Eye
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Wanted
Indiana Jones IV

I am looking forward to checking out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road and The Defiance. And, of course, I'll be checking out Wall-E, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Get Smart and Kung Fu Panda on DVD when I have a chance.

Can't wait for Gervais' "This Side of the Truth". I think it comes out in March. Looks very, very promising. He's writing and directing that one too. I'm excited.

I've seen Tell No One and loved it up until one of the final scenes where they felt the need to have a character explain the entire plot in one scene. It's like the end of Psycho only 10x worse.

I also saw Benjamin Button tonight, and while I really liked it, it won't be making my top 10. Brad Pitt is amazing (and quite subtle), and the film is very well made, it just didn't strike me in the way it seems to have struck so many others.

It's a sad thing to say, but it appears to be true. Ghost Town was ignored and really shouldn't have been, it was a great comedy. Oh, and Ethan, I agree with you on Get Smart, I liked that one too.

You know what, I totally forgot about "Ghost Town"- caught it at a second run discount theater here in Irvine, and I loved it. I wasn't actually a fan of "Dan in Real Life", but I think this movie did perfectly what "Dan" attempted to do. And I also am rooting for Ricky Gervais in more lead fare like this movie (even though "Ghost Town" displayed maybe 40% of his actual wit).

Ghost Town
The Dark Knight
The Incredible Hulk
WALL*E
Eagle Eye
Horton Hears a Who!
Iron Man
The Strangers
Get Smart
Madagascar 2

Now you might be thinking: "Really? Get Smart? Madagascar? Those are like.. easy popcorn movies". Well too bad. I liked 'em. I loathed the first Madagascar and was absolutely surprised at how consistently funny and thoroughly entertaining the sequel was. As for "Get Smart"... once again, just entirely true, harmless, silly fun and I love Steve Carell. And "Eagle Eye", while not entirely throughly original, still had very well-crafted intensity and action, and it was just such humongous escapist entertainment. I appreciated it.

Now there's still "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Doubt" and "Yes Man" (I'm a huge Jim Carrey fan. Sue me) so "Madagascar 2" and "Get Smart" will probably get pushed out.

That isn't my official list in order of course.. just the line-up of the contenders. I'll put 'em in order when this year wraps up.

I did intentionally put "Ghost Town" over "Dark Knight" though, just so that it will stand out because in a sea of crappy early-fall movies, NO ONE went to go see "Ghost Town". "Ghost Town", in my opinion, was classic entertainment, and it had such a huge, GOOD heart, and genuine humor. But everyone missed out on it. They went to go see utter crap like "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", "Burn After Reading" and "Lakeview Terrace" instead.

It comes to DVD at the end of December. Really guys, it's so, so good. Not the best movie EVER, but definitely one of my new favorites. It's like this year's "Dan in Real Life"... one of those little movies that packs a wallop of genuine humor and heart.

I totally agree that "The Incredible Hulk" gets shafted just because it came out after "Iron Man" and was pretty much forgotten in the public eye when "Dark Knight" was released- it's a very underrated and ultimately fun superhero movie. Hell, 2008 was a pretty damn good year - three fantastic superhero movies to make up for an overblown, somewhat shitty threequel from 2007.

I agree w/ most of your list, ( I loved "Rambo" & "In Bruges" dearly), and I'd like to add "Redbelt" and "Stop-Loss" if I were to make my own list. And I'm so very looking forward to "Benjamin Button" and "The Wrestler"- cannot wait until they open (and In the case of "The Wrestler", when they open at an indie theater near me).

@Brad Brevet: I loved Speed Racer, what can I say. I thought that movie was a complete joy to look at, and I love Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox. I never understood why everyone gave it such a hard time (everyone I know loved it too, so I guess it's just one of those things).

@Scott: Wow, Speed Racer eh? Now I will say I think that is more surprising than my Hulk bid. Be sure to come back and tell us what you thought of Button.

@Jerzey Jon: Yeah, fanboys dismissed it because they fell in love with Iron Man, but I thought Hulk was far better than Iron Man, especially after seeing it again.

Actually I didn't see it, but I'm just surprised that you placed it in the list, since I've haven't heard anything about that movie in a long time, it's gotten no buzz, so I completely forgot about it.

Movies I have given 4 stars to (in no particular order):

- The Dark Knight
- In Bruges
- Redbelt
- Eagle Eye
- Speed Racer
- W.
- Quantum of Solace

This year has been a lot worse than last for movies, but there's still hope for the rest of the year. I get to see Benjamin Button tomorrow, Valkyrie Thursday, and Slumdog Millionaire next Thursday, so after that this list might look different.

I'm extremely surprised that you placed "The Incredible Hulk" among your current top ten.

Uh. Of your Top Ten Movies Midway 2008 list, I'm really looking forward to see In Bruges, Definitely Maybe and above all, The Fall.
Haha, I'll admit that actually I have In Bruges and Definitely Maybe waiting in my shelf. I just don't have the time.
But in the name of international movie piracy, it's so damn haaaaard to find The Fall here where I live (yes, in any format imaginable -- even the pirated ones). I've been craving to see it since the beginning of the year... Is it really that great or should I just give up? *sigh*
